PHYLLIS SHIRLEY WILLIAMS Phyllis (Phyl) Williams (nee Downie), born in Winnipeg, July 8, 1920, passed away peacefully at West Park Manor on August 27, 2011. Phyl was predeceased by her parents, Daisy and John Downie and by her loving husband Charles Williams, with whom she was happily married for 39 years. She will be forever missed by her daughters, Shirl Hauser and Carol Luinenburg, their husbands, Bruce and Erik and five grandchildren: Lauren, Julie, Kris, Mik and Kai, along with many nieces, nephews, friends and her sister-in-law, Joyce Gibson. Phyl is also cherished by her dear friend Frank Callen, whose loyalty and support continued long after Mom's illness progressed. Mom grew up in the West End and attended Mulvey School and Gordon Bell High. She later attended Business College, and as a young woman worked for Underwood Typewriter for about eight years as a bookkeeper. Mom then met the love of her life and married Charlie Williams in 1948. They immediately moved to St. James, and as their two daughters appeared, it was decided that Mom would stay home and look after the family, while Dad frequently needed to head out of town to work. Later on, in the early sixties, Phyllis went back to work as Assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the Viscount Gort Hotel. Phyllis was outgoing and fun-loving. She had a passion for dancing and she and Dad enjoyed the company of many friends and extended family members. Mom also belonged to a variety of women's clubs, the bridge club being the longest running. The Caddy Lake cottage became the centre of all holiday and weekend fun from spring to fall. Mom and Dad, again developed many wonderful friendships and spent most of their summers swimming, fishing, playing cards and berry picking. After Dad passed away, Mom continued to show her zest for life with her strong and fiercely independent spirit. She always strove for happiness and did her best to move forward with grace. Family was of the utmost importance to Phyllis and she took great joy from her time with her grandchildren. We are grateful that Mom lived a rich, full life. Phyllis spent her last three years residing at West Park Manor Personal Care home. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff for their kind and compassionate care during her time there. A celebration of remembrance will be held on Wednesday, September 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, Mom would like you to make a donation to West Park Manor, 3199 Grant Ave., Winnipeg, R3R 1X2, c/o Ruben Latour, Social Services Director.
