THOMAS COPELAND SMEARS November 10, 1929 - August 25, 2011 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our Uncle Tom. Tom was predeceased by his wife Margaret, and is survived by his sister, Eileen Kitching, his nieces, nephews and their families. Tom, son of Sidney and Hattie Smears, grew up on the family farm at Homewood, MB. Through the 1950s and 1960s, he was a long haul truck driver for various transport companies. In 1971, he started working for Safeway and drove for them for 25 years until his retirement. Together Tom and Marge enjoyed their home on Oxford St., holidays to Hawaii, Mexico and their summers at Northland Trailer Park. Tom was always a loyal friend, and he could always be counted on to help. Even ill and weak, he could still give good advice, kept up with the world and delighted us with his quick wit and sense of humour. Nieces and nephews were very special to Uncle Tom and he will be deeply missed. We would like to thank the home care staff for their daily care that enabled Uncle Tom to remain in his home. In keeping with Uncle Tom's wishes, no formal service will be held. Friends and family are invited to celebrate his life on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Transcona Legion, 117 Regent Ave. E. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E. J. COUTU CO.
