SAM (SHOIKE) CHOCHINOV After a valiant battle with cancer, Sam "Shoike" Chochinov passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the age of 87. He will be deeply missed by his wife Janet, his children Perry (Dixie), Allan and Bev (Peter), his five grandchildren, Shira (Eyal), Laura (Fabian), David (Monica), Tamara (fiancé Nate), and Louis, and eight great-grandchildren: Maayan, Aviv, Lior, Maor, Leeam, Aaron, Yishaya and Aishsa. Also left to mourn his loss are his brother Lou (Gertie) and sister Esther, his brother-in-law Izzy and sister-in-law Celia. He was predeceased by his first wife Anne, and his son Hershey. Known as Shoike to his friends and family, Sam was a remarkable man. He was a farmer, entrepreneur, businessman, caregiver and he put his heart and soul in all of these endeavours. He worked tirelessly, until he was 84, often working two jobs, so that his family could have a better life. Yet he was still able to be the first to help others. I'll send you the bill, he would say but never would. If he wasn't working he was busy gardening or cooking. Even after long days of work and exhausted, he would revel in the latest accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His smile would light up the room. A wonderful story teller, he had a phenomenal memory and mind and could recount wonderful stories of people he met in his work. Through all of life's trials and tribulations Sam never wavered, and kept going. Forever etched in the memory of his family and friends is Sam in his red half ton truck with its logo of a winged tire. He is in his red winged chariot ascending to heaven. The grave side service was held at the Shaarey Zedek cemetery, with Bill Weissmann officiating. The pallbearers were Peter Mendelson, Louis Mendelson, Nathan Weltman, David Chochinov, Robert Chochinov and Sam Miller. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.
