WALTER DUBOWEC On Thursday, August 25, 2011, Walter passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 79 with family by his side. Beloved husband of Alice and father to Walter, Teresa, Nadine and Michael. Walter was the Managing Partner for the Winnipeg office of Deloitte Touche and then a Director of the Bank of Canada. Walter was born in Winnipeg in 1932 and attended Kelvin High School. He received his Chartered Accountant designation in 1956, his F.C.A. in 1973, his Federal trustee license in 1972 and in 1995 was admitted as a Life Member of the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals. He lectured at the University of Manitoba and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba. From 1963 to 1967 he was a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Board of Examiners. In 2002, Walter received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants. In 1956, Walter joined the Winnipeg office of Deloitte Touche, Chartered Accountants. He became a Partner in 1967 and Office Managing Partner in 1975, a position he held for two decades until his retirement in 1994. Walter earned a professional reputation as an expert witness in the litigation of financial matters and advisor to various levels of government. In 1984, he was appointed to the Canadian Industrial Renewal Board and auditor of Canada Ports Corporation. From 1996 to 2002 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Canada. He was the Bank's first director of Ukrainian descent since it was established in 1935. Walter Dubowec was on the Winnipeg Business People magazine's list of the province's 25 most influential people in 1990. For many years, he was the Official Agent of the Liberal Party of Canada in Manitoba. Walter advised five Prime Ministers, many Premiers of Manitoba and the Mayors of Winnipeg. Walter Dubowec gave his time to community and charitable organizations. Though retired, he was active with the Manitoba Medical College Foundation, Joe Brain Foundation, Foundations For Health and the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchial Council. Walter enjoyed spending summers at his cottage in Victoria Beach and made 37 visits to Hawaii with Alice. In retirement, he worked around his home and cottage and enjoyed working with computers. In 2004 he visited his father's village in Ukraine. Walter is predeceased by his parents, Wasyl and Petrunelia, and brother, Peter. Left to cherish many wonderful and fond memories are Walter's children, Walter Peter (Althea), Teresa (Jim), Nadine (Bruce) and Michael (Lindsay). He leaves behind his grandchildren, Andrew, Jennifer, Jacqueline, Danielle, Thomas, Ainsley and Ashleigh. A private family interment was held on August 29.
