IYVAN WASYL CHUCHMAN 1989 - 2011 It is with great sorrow that our family announces the sudden passing of Iyvan, our dearly beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and uncle, on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at the age of 21 years. In mourning and left to cherish Iyvan's memory are his mother Irene and father George; his sister Olesia Shewchuk (Jason) and niece Valya; his sister Andriana (Adam Hildebrandt); his grandmother Anna Kuzmych and aunt Slava, in Sudbury and Toronto; his aunt and godmother Martha Chuchman (Lorne Anderson), his uncle and godfather Andrew (Katrusia), his aunt Roma Paetsch (Marvin); his cousins, Danylo and Alexandra, Tamara and Talia; and extended family and friends in Canada, U.S., Australia, and Ukraine. Iyvan was born in Winnipeg on October 1, 1989. He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary School and missed Sister Laura very much when she left for Australia. In primary school, he became a chess enthusiast and showed some natural ability participating in scholastic chess tournaments, which ranked him as the Grade 4 and Grade 5 Manitoba Scholastic Chess Champion. This qualified him as a member of the Manitoba team at the CFC Canadian Youth Chess Championships for two consecutive years: in Prince Edward Island, where he contributed to a 2nd place silver medal for the Manitoba team in the Under 10 age class, and then in Calgary. Iyvan completed primary school at John de Graff and attended H.C. Avery Middle School before entering St. Paul's High School. Iyvan loved sports, had some natural aptitudes and was a quick learner. He especially loved to play baseball, and in his second year of play with the West Kildonan Cougars Pee Wee team in 2002, Iyvan worked his way up to playing first base, earning the Most Improved Player award. When attending St. Paul's High School (2003 to 2007), with very little previous team experience, Iyvan again proved a quick-learner at volleyball by earning a spot on the Grade 9 Crusader Team and the Most Improved Player award at the end of the season. He was proud to play Crusader Volleyball on the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams in Grades 10 and 11. Academically, Iyvan earned Gold Cards for outstanding academic achievement in Grades 9 through 12 at St. Paul's High School. He played the trumpet enthusiastically in the St. Paul's Jazz Band and Concert Bands and challenged himself further by learning the French Horn for the the concert band. Also, he sang in the St. Paul's choir and volunteered at Holy Family Home. Upon graduation, he received awards for academic excellence and a school Letter Award for combining high academic standing and extra-curricular activities in sports and music. Iyvan was awarded the University of Winnipeg Special Entrance Scholarship, a Carpathia Credit Union Scholarship, and in the course of his studies, several University of Winnipeg Continuing Education Scholarships. He majored in chemistry and upon graduation in June 2011 from the University of Winnipeg, with a B.Sc. Degree, was the recipient of the Gold Medal in Chemistry (General). Also, Iyvan developed a strong interest and excelled in courses in Psychology and in his graduating year and had become a TA in the Psychology Department. He received excellent results on his dental admissions test, but was contemplating to pursue further studies in Psychology this fall and continuing his TA work. Iyvan was active in the Ukrainian community as a member of PLAST Ukrainian Youth scouting organization, enjoying the camaraderie of excursions and summer camps from a very young age. He loved to sing in the Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral Choir, and on occasion with the O. Koshetz Choir. He loved attending frequent family birthday parties. He also enjoyed dancing at Plast New Year's Malankas, playing ping pong, tennis, soccer, Risk and video games. His cat Cheechka meant a lot to him as well. Iyvan was a deep thinker, and had a voracious appetite for learning. He was especially interested in history and world affairs. He was a very fast learner with an uncanny ability to learn quickly and process information efficiently. He was a kind soul, polite and appreciated humour and making people laugh. He paid much attention to detail and set very high standards for himself, too often being his own harshest critic. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 7 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir and Olga, 115 McGregor Street with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Iyvan's memory may be made to the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre (Oseredok') or to a charity of your choice.
