BRUCE RAYMOND CHUDLEY Bruce Raymond Chudley passed away peacefully on September 2, 2011 at the Health Sciences Centre, 48 hours after suffering a massive stroke. He was surrounded by family when he took his last breath. Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Nola; his children, Marlis (Ron), Bruce (Jennifer) and Scott (Jackie). He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Sarah, Erin, Gage, Andrew, Eric and Carter, whom he adored and supported in their education and numerous sporting activities. Bruce was born and raised in Transcona. At the age of 16 he decided to start a career with the Canadian National Railway. After five years Bruce decided that a life on the trains was not for him! Taking a large pay cut, he joined the Transcona Police Department in 1963 and never looked back. In 1974 Bruce joined the Winnipeg Police Department. He spent 29 years patrolling the streets and serving the citizens of Winnipeg. He retired on April 16, 1992 as a Sargent in District 4. After retirement, Bruce and Nola sold their home in Transcona and made their permanent home on Lee River. Soon after moving to Lee River, Bruce continued his desire to serve society. He ran for Municipal Counsel and won a seat in October 1992, he spent 10 years as a Counsellor. During his last two years in office he served as Deputy Reeve. He was instrumental in many initiatives undertaken by the municipality. Bruce continued his legacy of caring for the safety and welfare of others when he spearheaded the development of the new fire hall and the property numbering system which makes locating remote rural properties easier for EMS personal. His concern in preserving the natural beauty of the Lac Du Bonnet area was evident in his role in the development of the new transfer station. Bruce retired from office after deciding not to run for re-election in 2002. Bruce led a very full and active life playing hockey and baseball well into his 50's. He was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in June 2008 as a member of the Elmwood Giants Juniors (1957 to 1961). The Giants appeared in five consecutive junior provincial championship finals. They were victorious in three of the five. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C OS6 or to a charity of choice.
