DAWN GALSTON 1935 - 2011 Dawn, the light of our lives, passed away at the Victoria General Hospital on Friday, September 30, 2011. She was so proud of her children, Yvonne Yarish (Doug), Brenda Ross (Dave) and Blair Galston and of her brilliant grandchildren, Sheldon and Robbie Ross. She also loved her stepgrandchildren; Hayley and Jordan Yarish, added to her family after Yvonne married Doug. Dawn was predeceased by her sister Fay Abbey and her dear parents Percy and Violet Agnew years ago. She was 76. The day before she died, we were fortunate to be able to tell her how very much we loved her. And she was so brave, knowing exactly what was happening to her. We, the family, hardly know what to say. What can one say about a person who was always content to support others and give so totally of herself to see others succeed? After re-meeting Bob, the love of her life, at the Canadian National Railways in 1954 (they had been in the same classroom from grades one through six at La Verendrye School), she worked to put him through University, gave birth to their three children and became a homemaker. Dawn volunteered everywhere: besides serving on many different church committees, she started a letter-writing group for Amnesty International at two different churches and she became the volunteer Secretary for Amnesty's Winnipeg office. She also became secretary for her church while the full-time secretary was away. Dawn loved to sing and was a part of so many secular and church choirs; she led the C.G.I.T. Choir at St. Vital United Church. She was also well-read and theologically astute, a woman with a deep and secure faith through whom others found faith. Along with a friend, she started a women's study group at Charleswood United Church that met on Fridays, calling it T.G.I.F. ( Together, Growing In Faith ). She led it for 11 years and it is still meeting after over 20 years. She cared about everyone. Dawn was a true partner with Bob. One of the great highlights of her life was when she and Bob celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2010. It couldn't have been more rewarding for both of them. The whole family is grateful to the staff on Four South at Victoria Hospital for their compassionate and faithful care. A celebration of her life will take place at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Boulevard on Friday, October 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Charleswood United Church, Winnipeg, MB, R3R 0G6 or The Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 9Z9.
