MARION GRACE MCRUER Lord leave me not to linger long When my work for Thee is done. But gently call me by my name And I will gladly come. Jesus, my Lord and Saviour I long for Heaven and Home. Peacefully on October 3, 2011, Marion was called home by her loving Lord and Saviour, at Lions Manor at the age 101. Marion was the second daughter of R.A. McRuer, pioneer Pharmacist of St. Boniface and Ida Grace McRuer, who predeceased her in 1974 and 1985 respectively as well as her brother Robert McRuer of Winnipeg MB. and sister Jean (Harry) Titcombe of Minneapolis U.S.A. who died in 2010. She will be sadly missed by her loving sister Reta, with whom she lived for many years. The nieces and nephews of these families and their children will remember Marion fondly. Marion was born in St. Boniface January 11, 1910. She lived in the family home in Norwood and attended schools there, at the University of Manitoba and Winnipeg Normal School. She began her teaching career in a one room country school at Fairfax, at the age of 19. She taught in Elphinstone and Morden during the Great Depression. Then Marion chose a second profession, graduating as a nurse from Toronto General Hospital in 1938. After several years of nursing she resumed her teaching career and taught in Glenboro Mb., in Brandon, at St. Margaret's School for Girls in Victoria, BC and Havergal College in Toronto. Marion returned to Winnipeg and taught primary grades in St. Vital for 24 years retiring in 1972. Marion travelled to many countries of the world with her sister Reta and on other tours. She was particularly interested in hospitals, two in Quito Ecuador and one in Africa. She has generously supported these hospitals for many years. Marion attended Elim Chapel for many years, then Grace Bible Church. She was a founding member of Christian Women's Club, the Retired Women's Teachers Club, the Wednesday Morning Musical and the Toronto General Hospital Nurses Alumnae. The family wishes to thank many wonderful people who gave Marion tender care and encouragement at Lions Personal Care Home. Cremation has taken place. Honoring Marion's wishes, there will not be a memorial service. She served her Lord with gladness and is rejoicing with Him forever. You will guide me with your counsel and afterwards receive me to glory. Psa.73:24. You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psa. 16:11. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Miss McRuer was my 4th grade teacher during the 1968-69 school year. I remember staying after class many times to help her clean the blackboards, because I really enjoyed talking to her. On one of those occasions, she gave me a small box of colored wooden beads, which I cherished. Another time she transplanted a small zebra cactus into a little green pot for me to take home. She was a strong, independent woman who always encouraged her students and served as an excellent role model. - Posted by: Anne Lavack (Student) on: Jan 30, 2017
