BRUCE GARTH JOHNSTON 1930 - 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Bruce Johnston on Saturday, October 8, 2011. Bruce is predeceased by his wife Marlene as well as his parents Isaac and Stella Johnston. Left to cherish his memory are his children Jeff (Cindy and her daughter Paris), and Arla (Dale) McNally, and grandchildren Sara and Erin. Bruce was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on April 10, 1930. After completing high school in Dauphin, Bruce attended the University of Manitoba. He graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1954 and was admitted to the Manitoba Bar to practice law in 1955. He returned to Dauphin and worked with his father and brother, eventually establishing the firm of Johnston, Johnston, Johnston and Oliphant. After a brief attempt at retirement, he returned to the practice of law with the firm of Hawkins and Sanderson where he worked until he ceased practice in 1998. In Bruce's early years, he played on a number of local hockey and baseball teams. He remained active in the local curling scene for many years and often played in the region's bonspiels. Perhaps his greatest interest was in the outdoors. He had a profound love of nature and in particular, the diversity and beauty of the Dauphin area. He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman. Bruce considered himself very fortunate to have made and maintained many friendships throughout his life. He often spoke with great fondness of friends and good times shared. The family would like to extend their most heartfelt appreciation for the support shown to Bruce by all his friends and neighbours over the years. He always enjoyed having a visit and a good laugh. Those who were on the receiving end of his practical jokes know this well. In addition, the family would like to thank everyone who shared their kindness and comforting words these past days. They are truly appreciated. Bruce had a love for Dauphin and could not imagine living anywhere else. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Dauphin and District Community Foundation. It will come as no surprise to those who knew Bruce that he insisted that no service be held.
