BETTY DARLING SOBKOWICH (nee FIELD) November 7, 1925 - October 17, 2011 It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of their beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother at the age of 85. Mom was predeceased by her parents, John and Elizabeth; her two older sisters, Grace and Rose; and many of her furry friends throughout the years. Mom leaves to mourn her husband of 62 years, Victor; her three children, Vicki (Jeff), Vince (Nam), Val (Bryan); her grandchildren, Jennifer (Taras), Chris, Josh, Chelsea, Liam, Dylan, Shawn (Becky), Shane (Chelsea); her great-grandchildren, Austin, Alexander, Aidan, Noah, Olivia, Ethan, Levi, Judah, Joel, Kale and newborn Anna; as well as her cat Soxx. Every grandchild and great-grandchild received a Gramma Sobkowich hand knit afghan when they were born. Grandchildren are the crown of the aged Proverbs 17 verse 6. Betty was born in Winnipeg and lived here her entire life graduating from Gordon Bell. She worked at Eaton's and later at Sears where she worked for several years. A true animal enthusiast, Mom loved all animals but particularly horses in her early years; especially her horse Laddie . 62 years ago Mom traded horses for family when she met Dad and together they took great pride in raising their family. Mom met Dad at a dance hall and they have danced to the music of the 1940s and 1950s ever since. Dancing had been such a passion that in 1970 they played a major role in the formation of the Westview Dance Club where they have made many dear friends. To date, the Club is still going strong and the numbers continue to grow. Mom has had many other accomplishments in her lifetime and was a true pioneer in areas she felt was important. When she had her own twins, Mom assisted in founding the Twins and Triplets Club in 1957 which has now spread across Canada. When Mom was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration around 22 years ago, which left her legally Blind, she decided not to let that stop her dancing. While she kept on dancing with the Westview Dance Club, 20 years ago Mom, along with Dad, started dance lessons at the CNIB teaching the clients to dance. She was also, with Dad, the face of the United Way and was proud to be a part of a successful fundraising campaign. Amongst all of her accomplishments, she spent every summer with her family at their beloved cottage at South Beach, Gimli. In the winter months, Mom and Dad would vacation in Florida and San Diego with many of their friends from the Westview Dance Club to visit many of the popular dance clubs. Mom was well known for her contagious laugh, smile, quick wit and jokes. She loved to laugh and just have fun. But most of all, she was known and adorned for her love and dedication to her family. She would happily do anything for her family. Her kind, compassionate spirit will live on forever in our hearts. She touched everyone who knew her and she will be greatly missed. Betty's family would like to extend our thanks to the Westhaven Retirement Residence for providing such a wonderful home and atmosphere for Mom and Dad. Also, to the ambulance attendants and the Grace General Hospital for their support. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with interment and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to a charity of your choice. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website.
