Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMABEL DAPHNE REID (nee GAHN) February 13, 1919 - October 6, 2011 Mabel Daphne Reid passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 6, 2011, at age 92. Mabel was born to Henry and Ivy Gahn and grew up in Nanton, Alberta. From her first day of school, Mabel knew that one day she would become a teacher. After high school she attended the Normal School in Calgary, graduating in 1938. She taught grades one to 12 in one-room schoolhouses in Arthur, Herronton and Ridgeview. She was teaching in Lacombe in 1943 when she got involved in the war effort, enrolling in the Radio College of Canada in Toronto. She became a licensed wireless radio operator and was assigned to a monitoring station in Winnipeg, intercepting wireless traffic between enemy submarines and their control stations. It was in Winnipeg where she met Frank, her husband of 66 years. They settled and raised their family in Winnipeg, where Mabel resumed her teaching career with a kindergarten in the family home basement, and later, at Glen Elm, and as a resource teacher at Buchanan and Crestview schools. Mabel's greatest passion was teaching and caring for children and babies. Mabel enjoyed spending summers at the cottage at Falcon Lake, painting, crafts, knitting and quilting and was a long time member of the Winnipeg Rock and Mineral Club. The Women's Circle group at Deer Lodge United Church was an important part of her life. Mabel is predeceased by Frank and by her siblings: Kathleen (Fowell) Shumka, Kenneth Gahn, Norma (Gordon) Dibble and Wanda (Bill) Shaw. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Beverley Reid, Larry Reid (Antonia Lancaster), her grandson Whitney Ota (Veronica Lawrence); sisters-in- law Maisie Gahn, Florence Birtwistle, Barbara Reid and Rose (Reid) Krumenacker, as well as by many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the loving care given by the people of both Wentworth Manor in Calgary and Lindenwood Manor in Winnipeg. The family will privately celebrate the lives of Mabel and Frank in a graveside ceremony in Winnipeg, in the spring of 2012.
