FREDA BOERSMA (nee ALGERA) It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Freda Boersma on October 22, 2011, at the age of 86 years. With her family by her side, she peacefully slipped away to enter into God's rest with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Freda and her husband Minze (Max) who passed away on October 14, 1988, immigrated to Canada on June 1, 1949, from Wons, Friesland (The Netherlands) and settled in Winnipeg. As the daughter of a baker, Freda baked many wedding cakes for fellow Dutch immigrants while Max worked in a bakery for their first six years. They faced many challenges as new immigrants, but their faith in God and ability to work side by side always carried them through the difficult times. They wanted to start their own business, so from the savings they acquired together they were able to start a market garden business in St. Boniface in 1956. The business flourished over the next 20 years, due in great part to her strength, character, and astrounding work ethic. Max and Freda then decided to move to the Bird's Hill area where they established a greenhouse and bedding plant business. Freda settled in a senior's block in North Kildonan in 1992. Her passion for growing flowers was evident in her small garden. She soon provided many friends with gardening tips, as well as sharing tomatoes from her bountiful crops. Her family was her life and she provided wise counsel to all of us at various times in our lives. She was a prayer warrior not only for her family, but also for others that she encountered in her daily life. She lived her life as an extraordinary example for us all. Her advice always simple but poignant, to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 She leaves to mourn her son Bob (Kay) of Halifax; grandson Shaun of Toronto; her daughter Joan Boersma; granddaughters, Michelle Plomp (Michael); great-grandson Benjamin; Leanne Ross (Darren); sisters, Annie Wiersma and Its Boukes of the Netherlands; as well as her dear church family at Place of Grace. The family would like to extend special thanks to Barb Huse, Dr. Houston, and the community palliative care program. Special thanks to her granddaughter and personal nurse, Leanne Ross, for her tender loving care. A private family interment will take place at Green Acres Funeral Home, on Tuesday, October 25 at 11:00 a.m. A celebration of her life will follow at the Place of Grace, 1040 Beach Avenue at 1:00 p.m., Dr. Thomas Schultz presiding, all welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Freda's memory to CancerCare Manitoba. The Lord will keep you from all harm he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:3.
