IRENE MARTIN (nee UNDERWOOD) Surrounded by her family, Irene Martin (nee Underwood), peacefully passed away at Grace Hospital on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Nanci, Lisa, and son Tony, daughter-in-law Wendy, granddaughters, Lauren and Kelsey. Mom was predeceased by husband Jerry Martin, sister Edna Andrews and brother Bob Underwood. Mom also leaves to celebrate her life numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many close, caring friends. With a family history going back over 200 years in Manitoba, Mom was born and raised in Winnipeg and recently celebrated her 88th birthday. Mom had many passions in life: her children and grandchildren being her greatest one. A close second was her love of singing. Mom was a member of the Winnipeg Chapter of Sweet Adelines for over 50 years and an honorary member of the Assiniboine Chapter. How do we find the words to describe our mom: smart, fun loving, creative, caring, a bit eccentric, enjoyed being the center of attention, enjoyed a good party, loved laughing - especially at herself, and some of her wardrobe choices made Lady Gaga look like a librarian. Mom was so proud of every accomplishment her family achieved and lived every glorious moment with you. The family wishes to give their deepest thanks to the amazing staff on 3 North at Grace Hospital - the compassion and care you gave our mother was very comforting and appreciated more than you know. A special heartfelt thanks goes to Dr. Paul Daeninck along with Tracy and Tara at the St. Boniface Hospital CancerCare Clinic. Dr. Daeninck epitomises the unique balance between clinical acumen and compassionate care. In keeping with Mom's wishes there will not be a formal funeral service. Instead we will celebrate her life with family, friends and fun. Keep singing Mom, we love you! Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

  • So many fond memories - as only Irene could create with so many people. After moving to Victoria from the house next to Casa Martinuzzi, Irene and I especially kept in touch on Christmas Eve (to reminisce about how much I loved her cream cheese 'n' cherry sandwiches and on Canada Day (when we talked about her long ago "Friendshp Party" for the folks on Rosewood Place). I follow that tradition here in Victoria every Canada Day and always hoist a toast to Irene. She is remembered with love. - Posted by: Barbara Murphy (former neighbour, good friend) on: Jul 19, 2012
