• I happened upon a notice of the death of Alan Young in the Winnipeg Free Press. Taking note of his date of birth, I could not help but think that it might be the Alan Young I knew as a Spruce Street neighbour and friend in Winnipeg's West End. Having moved with my parents from Winnipeg to California in 1947, I finished high school in Los Angeles and went on to UCLA and a long career as a teacher and professor of political science (with an interruption of six years with the United States Air force). My wife and I left Southern California for a retirement in Portland, Oregon nine years ago. If memory serves me, it was Alan Young who accompanied me on a bicycle trip to Portage la Prairie at about the age of 12. Bound for Brandon, but finished the last half leg of the endeavour by train. In any case, if this is the young pal I knew so long ago, I offer his family and friends my belated but sincere condolences. I remember with affection and appreciation my early years in Winnipeg and for the young people of fine character with whom I grew up. Alan was surely one of these.
