ROSE AGNES REID December 2, 1923 - October 30, 2011 Rose Reid passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital on October 30, 2011. Rose is survived by son Bill Reid (Patricia), daughter Leah Paul (Ralph), grandchildren, Jennifer Jeanson, Shannon Reid (Ben Zettergren), Derek Paul (Marnie Pisclevich), Scott Paul, Bonnie Bemister (Adam), great-grandchildren, Brianne Jeanson, Alexander Jeanson, Nathan Zettergren, Rylan Zettergren, and Lyla Rose Bemister. Rose is also survived by her sisters in Ontario, Ada Hussey, Babe Ferguson (Dave), Millie McQuire and sisters-in-law Margaret Howey of Edmonton and Noreen Reid of Toronto plus many other relatives across Ontario and Alberta. Rose was predeceased by her husband and soulmate Bill in 2007, her sister Lil McIntyre, brothers-in-law David Reid, John McIntyre, Jack Hussey, Art McQuire and Mel Howey. She was born in Toronto in 1923 and grew up in the Beaches area in a loving family of women as she lost her father when she was only 11 years old. She met her husband Bill while visiting the Toronto Riverdale Zoo on a sunny Sunday afternoon in September of 1941. All it took was a smile and Bill was hooked. Bill was a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force who was on leave at the time. After a short courtship, they were married on July 4, 1942. When Bill left the Air Force in 1945, they moved to Winnipeg where they raised their two children and spent over 65 wonderful years together. In addition to her role as a mother, Rose had a very successful career with the Manitoba Telephone System, then as Business Agent for the Manitoba Telephone Employees Association and finally as the Public Relations Director of Red River Co-op. In addition to her career, she was also very active in numerous other areas, a few of which were: a member of the Manitoba Lotteries Commission Licensing Board, Committee Member of the Commission of the Status of Women, an Executive Member with the Winnipeg Business and Professional Women's Club, Past President of the Northwest Co-op Health and Social Services Clinic, and was the Past President of the Winnipeg Chapter of the Soroptimists Club. She was also the first woman graduate of the University of Manitoba three year Labour Course and taught speech reading to the hearing impaired at the St. Vital Senior Centre and the Community Centre for the Deaf. Bill and Rose enjoyed their life together especially their time with family and friends at their cottage at Winnipeg Beach. Mom also enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and other games and was an avid reader. She also loved travelling and enjoyed many trips with Bill. In 1992, Rose was diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositis which is a very rare disease which effects the body's muscles. Despite the pain of her disease, she still lived her life to the fullest. She adapted her activities to accommodate her IBM particularly after she acquired her electric wheelchair. It is testament to her character that she never complained about her situation and always maintained a positive attitude. She was an inspiration to everyone she met. Special thanks go out to the wonderful people from Home Care who assisted Rose throughout the last 12 years of her life. Their compassion, dedication, and kindness were sincerely appreciated. Also, special recognition to Dr. Lori Hilderman who was always there for her. Rose was a loving wife, a supportive mother, a generous grandmother and a devoted great-grandmother who will be missed and never forgotten. A private family service to celebrate Rose's life will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, donations in Rose's memory can be made to the charity of their choice. www.kilcollinscremationservice.com 204-782-3541
