Marguerite was born June 19, 1917 in Winnipeg and lived most of her life in the old west end attending Greenway and General Wolfe Schools. She never forgot the hard depression years , leaving school early to work part-time at Eaton's and do housework and ironing for one dollar a day and street-car fare. Through her brother Raine Marguerite met her soul mate, Arthur Blocksidge and was married at St. Mathews Anglican Church March 23, 1940. They enjoyed 16 wonderful years together at Stony Mountain where Arthur was employed as a prison guard and Marguerite was a stay at home Mom for their two daughters, Carol and Holly. Arthur's sudden death in 1956 meant a move back to Winnipeg's west end and employment with the City of Winnipeg Parks and Recreation Department as cashier / life guard at Sherbrook Pool. Marguerite was an accomplished swimmer and went on to develop all the Learn to Swim and fitness programs that are now available at all city pools, her legacy to the citizens of Winnipeg. She retired in 1982 after 26 years, 17 of those years as program director. Above all, Marguerite valued family and friends, her cabin at Winnipeg Beach, travel, cross stitch, knitting, puzzles, curling, baseball, football, cats, and all her later friends and activities at Autumn House. My Gramma is one of the strongest most resilient fascinating people I have ever met. It didn't matter what happened in life she'd shake it off pull up her boot straps and keep right on going. She always said sometimes the biggest bumps are the best bumps and better things will come. We didn't always see eye to eye but we did have a great relationship with lots of heart to heart talks and mutual support. I miss my Gramma like crazy I even dial her phone number still to tell her things and then remember she isn't there! I want to tell her how well my daughter is doing now because she was so sick for a year and we were all really worried about her. Gramma called me all the time to make sure Jayde was okay. When Gramma was in the hospital suffering terribly she called me multiple times a day and I spent as much time with her as I could. I am a single parent with a full-time job but all my spare time went to Gramma. Rubbung lotion on her skin, trimming her nails, combing her hair, brushing her teeth, talking, listening, and just being present. She and I had a friendship as well as a family relationship and she is missed more than she will ever know. I hope she is powdering her nose, filing her nails and polishing them, putting her lipstick on, and eating her Werthers candies. All items I buried with her so she will be happy and ready to meet Art her life partner she missed for so long. By all accounts he was a wonderful man who was taken far too soon. I love you a bushel and a peck Gramma, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck. Sharen - Posted by: Sharen Giesbrecht (Grandaughter) on: Mar 17, 2012
