THORSTEN (THOR) HORST GRUENER April 18, 1947 - November 16, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Torsten (Thor) Gruener on November 16, 2011 at Concordia Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents Horst and Helga Gruener. Thor will be greatly missed by his family, his son Mark (Diana), daughter Stacy (Kevin), grandchildren Kevin, Joshua and Kaitlin. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. Dad was born in Leipzig, Germany. The family immigrated to Canada landing in Bremerhaven, Halifax December 15, 1954 and travelled to Winnipeg. The family settled in East Kildonan then moved to Southdale. Thor worked for many years in the restaurant industry and found a love of driving truck in later years. He was his most happiest driving truck for Bison Transport all across North America. He also loved anything that had to do with Model Railroading, whether it was building trains, reading books and magazines or just driving the trains on the tracks. He passed his love of modeling on to Mark. They spent many years building models. He also loved to spend time with his grandchildren as they grew up. We would like to thank all the staff at Concordia Hospital for all the wonderful care and treatment that Dad received. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to the Humane Society of Winnipeg, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 9Z9. Dad's life will be celebrated with a private family ceremony at a later date. We thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE (204) 949 2200 nbardal.mb.ca

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Sorry to hear of Torsten's passing. I just decided to google his name to see if I could find him and perhaps have a coffee and reminisce since people are slowly leaving this plane. He was too young. My parents and I had the same passage to Canada arriving some 5 months after he and his parents did. My parents and his spent many good times together and Torsten and I always played various games at the fun filled gatherings. During our teens, and when they had moved to Southdale we also spent time together. Last contact would likely have been mid 60s. I hope Honey (Kirsten), as I knew her, is well. - Posted by: Monika Beatty (nee Schroeder) (Family Friend) on: Apr 22, 2018

  • During a vacation with my family (in the 1960's) to South Dakota, we met the Gruener family from Canada. After we returned home to our farm in Nebraska, the Gruener family came for a couple of days to visit. I have always remembered them. As I recall, Thorsten was the older child, and he had a younger sister named Kirsten. I loved that name, and named my oldest daughter Kirsten. When Horst, Helga and family returned to Canada after their visit to the U.S., Helga sent my younger sister and me some doll clothes for our Barbie dolls. I have never forgotten that kindness. I am so sorry to see that Thorsten, as well as his parents, have passed. I think I have a few black and white photographs of their visit mixed in with a bunch of our old family photos. From personal experience, I know you have some wonderful memories in your family. Please accept my sympathy for your loss. - Posted by: Susanne Skiver (Maiden Name Schutte) (Acquaintance) on: Jan 03, 2015
