EUGENE REIMER Eugene died peacefully on the morning of November 5, 2011 at Jocelyn House in Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his mother Betty. He will be remembered by his father, Peter K. Reimer and his sister, Iris Reimer, as well as many friends. For the last year Eugene lived courageously with lung cancer. During this time he especially appreciated the support of his friend Doris Ames during his medical treatments. The following are Eugene's own words: I was born in Steinbach, MB in February 1949. I attended the Blumenhof School, the Steinbach High School, and I studied mechanical engineering and computer science at the University of Manitoba, resulting in B.Sc.M.E., B.Sc.(Hons), and M.Sc. Between 1976 and 1989, I worked in the Computer Centre at University of Manitoba, although I spent one year with Systemhouse in Los Angeles building a wanted person system for the L.A. County. Between 1989 and 1991, I again worked for Systemhouse (later acquired by EDS), based in Winnipeg, but travelled a good deal. Since 1991, I have been doing computer related projects on a contract or on a volunteer basis. In 1991, I moved to a quiet rural location beside the Red River near St. Jean, MB, where I rediscovered an interest in non-human living things such as trees and mustelids, while building trails through the riparian forest. My house was destroyed in the flood in 1997 and I now live with one cat in Winnipeg. I served as treasurer for the Blue Sky Investment Club and worked on the computer program for the bookkeeping. As a member of Native Orchid Conservation Inc., I have been their webmaster, a board member, treasurer, as well as a NOCI-appointed director and the webmaster of Debwendon Inc. I have recently embraced photography as a hobby, and have been snapping a lot of pictures, mostly of plants and insects, as a glance at my website will show. Eugene lived a full life, accomplishing many things and had many interests to pursue. It gave Eugene great satisfaction to leave a legacy by establishing two scholarships: the Eugene Reimer Scholarship for the Numerical Sciences and the Eugene Reimer Scholarship in Biological Sciences as well as establishing the Eugene Reimer Environment Fund with The Winnipeg Foundation. The Environment Fund will provide grants to maintain the boardwalk and interpretive trail along the eastern edge of the Brokenhead Wetland Ecological Reserve. A celebration of Eugene's life will be held Thursday, November 24 at 3:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr. in Steinbach, MB. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030
