JANEZ (JOHN) GORNIK September 21, 1942 - December 7, 2011 After a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family, Janez passed away at the age of 69 years at Riverview Health Centre. Left to forever cherish his memory is his beloved wife Frances; his two daughters, Martina (Robert), Ramona (Michael); and his two grandchildren, Everett and Olive. Also left to mourn his memory are his brother Anton; his sister Kristina; and cousins, Janez, Martin, Martina, and Marica in Slovenia. Janez was born in Metlika, Slovenia to Bara and Anton Gornik. Orphaned in infancy, Janez was raised with his siblings and five cousins by his grandmother and great-aunt. As a young man, Janez learned the trade of cabinet making and worked in Slovenia and Germany before moving to Canada in 1967 and continuing his trade. He settled in Winnipeg where he met Frances whom he married in 1970. Janez was an active member of the Canadian Slovenian Cultural Society and held board positions as both President and Secretary. Janez was proud of his heritage and took pride in participating and sharing with others in the community. Janez did not need a lot to make him happy and simply cherished the times spent around the table with family and friends sharing good food, wine and conversation. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Czaykowski (CancerCare), Dr. St. Godard, Dr. Wong and Dr. Farrugia and to the amazing nursing staff at Riverview Health Centre for the compassionate care they provided to our father in his final days. A private family viewing has already taken place. A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Slovenian Parish, 95 MacDonald Avenue, on Tuesday, December 13 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba or to the Canadian Slovenian Cultural Society Radio Show Program. 586-8044

  • John, I had no idea til months later. I told you once that you reminded me so much of my dad, heck you two worked in the same trade and at one point in the same town. Rest in peace big guy, you will be missed. - Posted by: allan (neighbour) on: Jul 17, 2013
