George passed away peacefully with his family by his side. George was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a man of many talents, born in the Kaleida district on December 5, 1918, the son of Albert and Henrietta Hodgson. From an early age George worked on the family farm south of Kaleida before enlisting in Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. George was stationed in England during the war and upon return George owned and operated an Imperial Oil gas station Mowbray, MB. This is when George met the love of his life, a young school teacher, Mildred Burnett. It wasn't long and they were inseparable, they married on April 10, 1947 in Winnipeg. Shortly after, they returned to the family farm, just three miles south of Kaleida. George was a successful farmer until his retirement in 1979. He drove a school bus (#17) for many years, which he very much enjoyed. Upon retirement George and Mildred spent 21 years of winter months in southern Texas where they made many new friends. George had many hobbies and interests; he was a jack of all trades and could manufacture many things. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, and spending time at their cabin at Pelican Lake. He enjoyed watching sports on T.V. His favourite teams were the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Henrietta Hodgson, his sister, Ruth Sadler (Bill), brothers, Ronald (Linda), Russell, brothers-in-law, Lloyd Jackson, Bill Sadler, David Marr, John Tarant, sisters-in-law, Linda Hodgson, Audrey Marr and Eileen Tarant as well as sons-in-law, Ervin Enns and Garry Kestirke. George will be sadly missed by his wife of 63 years, Mildred; his six children, Judy Enns of Morden, Maxine (Harvey) Friesen of Morden, Lesley Kestirke of Manitou, Barb (Larry) Klassen of Morden, Don (Elaine) Hodgson of Winnipeg and Gerald (Bonnie) Hodgson of Winnipeg; 21 grandchildren, Lisa, Michelle (Gerald), Steven (Leslie), Jeff, Trevor (Crystal), Shelley, Craig, Kristin (Ryan), Alison, Shelley (Trevor), Sheri (Mike), Bradley, Tanya (Mike), Tara, Tasha, Scott, Chad, Kris (Amanda), Candace (Shawn), Sean (Crystal), and Brittany, also 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is survived by sister, Mildred Jackson of Brandon, sister-in-law, Evelyn Ross of Saskatoon, SK, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Salem Home for their wonderful care and understanding towards Dad. Although we only met on several occasions your wit and memory never failed you. I remember so well one Saturday afternoon sitting with you and discussing World War 2, and your time spent in England during that time. Your love and affection you shared with your dear wife and family was so evident. My life is better for knowing and meeting you. Geoff - Posted by: Geoffrey Walker (Friend) on: Feb 09, 2012
