Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER KUNZIG With great sadness our beloved Walter Kunzig, was unexpectedly taken away from us on December 9, 2011. Walter was born on September 14, 1926 in Gumbinnen (East Prussia), Germany to Helen and Fritz Kunzig. He grew up along side his siblings Fritz Jr., Erna, Alfred, and Traute. Walter served his country during the Second World War in Germany and grew to become a young man filled with confidence and compassion. In May of 1954 Walter married the love of his life and soul mate Karla. They celebrated their honeymoon while immigrating to Canada the following month. Upon arriving Walter took on a variety of jobs, and eventually settled on one, in his field of expertise as an industrial electrician. They moved to Kitimat, BC where their daughter Karen was born in 1958. Two years later upon returning to Winnipeg their son Gordon was born in 1960. Walter continued to be a dedicated employee of Comstock Int. for 30 years where he worked his way to a foreman's position with the company. He was valued and respected within the industry and a supportive mentor to all those who had the opportunity to work along side him. Walter and Karla's love for one another formed a special connection that bonded them as Best Friends . This love and devotion for each other remained constant throughout their journey in life for the past 57 years. He had a love for adventure and travel which created many wonderful memories with friends throughout North America, Europe and the Carribean. Walter and Karla especially enjoyed South Padre Island were they migrated each winter as Winter Texans for the past 20 years. Walter's sanctuary and second home was the cottage at Bird River. It was here that the family and friends would gather throughout the seasons and share in such celebrations as Christmas, birthdays and special events enjoying quality time with one another. Walter was a dedicated Opa, teacher, and guide to his grandchildren, Arno, Markus, Micah, Aisha, Avalon and Soleil. Walter will be lovingly remembered by wife Karla, his daughter Karen (Armin von Hacht) son Gordon (Brenda Kunzig), his family in Germany; Erna, Alfred, Traute, Edith, Lolo, Werner, Gus and their respective extended families. Walter's entire family would like to extend a special thank you to all the dedicated doctors and nurses at the St. Boniface Hospital. Their empathetic care was a great assistance to all of us. A celebration of Walter's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 16. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Walter Kunzig to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1P6.
