EMILY KONOPELNY Peacefully, on December 13, 2011, with her family praying at her side, Emily Konopelny returned to The Father under the protection of the Blessed Mother of God. Born January 18, 1932, Emily lived her entire life in Winnipeg, attending Aberdeen, Machray, and St. John's schools. She worked a variety of full and part-time clerical and bookkeeping positions at Chicago Kosher, Frick Construction, and finally as a messenger room clerk for the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in the late 1970s. She also raised a family, made a home and volunteered extensively in her church and community. Emily was an active member of St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church filling roles on the parish council, women's league, and the Reverend Mitrat Joseph Pulak Foundation. She enjoyed volunteering with the Holy Family Home Ladies' Auxiliary organizing the much loved Friday night residents bingo, where everyone was a winner and left with a prize (or two). She also gave time and energy to support the Orlan Ukrainian Folk Ensemble, Ukraine-Kyiv Pavilion, and Ukrainian Canadian Congress. As a worker, treasurer, board member, kitchen organizer and fundraiser she filled a variety of volunteer roles in these organizations. Her volunteerism and active community involvement defined who she was, always eager to lend a helping hand in any capacity she could. Her greatest skill was getting herself and those around her involved with worthy causes. Her faith in the Lord, nurtured by her parents and the Church, provided her with the necessary talents and graces. As life time partners Emily and Basil drew strength from each other enjoying life's joys and sorrows. Family was important to them and they extended the love it provided outward. Emily is survived by her three children Anna-Marie (Jerry), Peter (Laura), and Christopher, and her two grandchildren that always brightened her day: Andrew and Dayna, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Emily was predeceased by her husband of 49 years Basil, her parents Peter and Anna Korobailo, and her sister Caroline Galarnyk. Prayers (Parastas) will be sung at 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 160 Euclid Avenue. Divine Liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 20 also at the church, with Fr. L. Ratushniak, C.Ss.R. officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery. Pallbearers are Christopher Konopelny, Andrew Konopelny, Mark Galarnyk, Adam Koziak, Ivas Babick, and Steven Crampton. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Holy Family Home, 165 Aberdeen Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2W 1T9, or The Welcome Home 188 Euclid Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2W 2X4. Special thanks are extended to family, friends, the Redemptorist Fathers, the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, and clergy for their prayers and support. Thanks are also extended to Dr. T. R. Babick, Dr. Goyten, and all the nursing and health care staff of Holy Family Home, St. Mary's Unit. VICHNAYA PAMYAT as our Mother and Baba returns to the Lord and His promise of eternal life.
