Date of Passing: Dec 22, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS (SANDY) VANCE February 9, 1943 - December 22, 2011 Sandy grew up in the Maritimes, but lived most of his adult life in Winnipeg. Friends and family will remember him as someone who loved dark chocolate, a hearty bowl of deer stew and strong coffee. Most of all he loved his son Douglas; Douglas' partner Robyn, and their son Keelyn. Sandy was a constant presence at the Indian Family Centre at 470 Selkirk Avenue, and he especially loved the babies and children who came to the centre. Kids loved him, too, and alternately thought of him as Santa Claus or their own Grandpa. Sandy knew just about everyone in the North end, and was always willing to share his cigarettes, his advice and his wisdom with anyone who needed it. His sometimes gruff exterior could not hide his heart of gold, and he had tremendous compassion for anyone in need. He made everyone who came to the family centre feel welcome, and everyone who knew him will miss him. A memorial service will be held in the future, please call Indian Family Centre for details.

Oh Sir Sandy Vance Selkirk Avenues Santa Clause. . . I shall miss seeing your gruff friendly face every morning when I come to work. I shall miss the water for my tea being ready the moment I step in the door. I shall miss sharing food with you, and our long talks about the north end and your insight about every person who walked in the door. As my man says you are Grandpa Selkirk.
