I have very fond memories of Herb when we worked together at DREE in the 1970's and 80's. In particular I remember his dedication and commitment to our rural development clients. Herb had a wonderful sense of humour which was magnified by his quick wit and "telling it like it was". My sympathy to Jan and their children for his untimely passing. - Posted by: Robert Stalker (Former Colleague) on: Mar 12, 2012

Herb was one of the senior officials at Industry Canada that selected me in 1983 to work as the Manager of the Northeast Manitoba Development Program of the Northern Development Agreement. Indeed, my selection gave me the opportunity to have a 30 year career in the Public Service. Herb was a good teacher and a strong advocate of Northern Economic Development. He will never be forgotten for his contribution to the creation of employment opportunities in Aboriginal and Northern communities in general. We will miss you Herb. My condolences to Jan and family. - Posted by: Charles Hatzipanayis (Former Colleague ) on: Feb 25, 2012

I was sad to hear that Herb had passed. I worked with Herb in the late 1970's and early 1980's in Winnipeg, in fact I followed in his footsteps in two successive jobs. He left very big tracks to have to follow and I'm sure they expanded over the years. Herb was a great guy with a unique sense of humor and a great heart. I regret that I lost track of Herb for the past 20 years, my loss. - Posted by: D.Lynn Gates (Former Colleague) on: Feb 03, 2012

I am very sad to learn of Herb's passing. I worked with Herb when he was with Industry Canada and really enjoyed his sense of humour and life perspective. When Herb left government we found an old brown sweater in his office that must have been hanging on his coat rack for years! That sweater has been given (loaned) annually for the past 30 years to the winner of the annual hockey playoff pool. This is a much sought after honour -- and I think Herb would appreciate the humour in it. We will always think of Herb when each year when the sweater is awarded. - Posted by: David Elgie (Colleague) on: Jan 28, 2012

Herb was pretty well the first Canadian I met when I came to Canada as a graduate student in 1967. He was a wonderful, very hospitable, and humorous friend. Great memories!!! He essentially introduced me to Canada. I was trying to track him down when I saw the obituary.... I'd not seen Herb for several years... Jan, Jeffery and Dalton my heartfelt condolences go out to all of you. I just returned from vacation and am in shock of hearing of Herb's passing. His passion for the feed industry and knowledge of how to work through all levels of government departments will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Ron Johnston (ANAC Member and Friend) on: Jan 06, 2012

Jan, Jeffery and Dalton my heartfelt condolences. I first met Herb during my tenure with the ANAC board and as a new member I relied on Herb to "show me the ropes". He was a very wise man and although we were in touch only sporadically over the last few years I will miss him deeply. - Posted by: Tracy Gilson (Friend) on: Dec 31, 2011

I had the pleasure of working with Herb on the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada, MB Division, over the past number of years. Herb was dedicated to Agriculture and the policies and programs the executive worked on. In addition, Herb was instrumental in the planning and organization of our association's national convention when it was held in Winnipeg. My condolences to Jan and family in this time of difficulty. Herb's smile, wit, and presence will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Darrell Roskos (ANAC Member & friend) on: Dec 31, 2011

Spent many years working with Herb as he kept us organized at the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada, MB division. He did all the work but let us board members think we were actually in charge. We had many meetings and long phone conversations which I will miss. Herb you were always sincere in our dealings and at the same time it was always fun. My condolences to Jan and family. Herb was a special guy who made people around him feel good. - Posted by: John and Shelagh Hare (ANAC and friend) on: Dec 30, 2011

Herb lived next door to my in-laws for years. He was the kind of neighbour you dream of. How often my fil and Herb planted trees. Then my son moved into his grandparents' house and he got the same treatment. Our family will all miss Herb. Our condolences to Jan, Jeff, and Dalton.. - Posted by: Anita (friend) on: Dec 30, 2011

Herb and I had a terific relationship, with our attempts to influence various Agriculture policies on both the municipal and provincial stage. Always quick witted, Herb was a tenacious member of the Manitoba A.N.A.C. and was integrual in all provincially hosted annual conventions. He will be sadly missed by the Feed and Commodity inustry partners, Craig - Posted by: Craig Mackie (Fellow Animal Nutrition Assoc.Executive) on: Dec 29, 2011

I was shocked to hear of Herb's passing as he has always been a very strong person who was not afraid to speak his mind and was very committed to meeting and setting goals and priorities...certainly in our church community where I know him best. Herb was a person who could always be counted on --- in his own inibitable but engaging way. I personally will miss our discussions and some of his theories and insightful views...always with a measure of humour. Herb will truly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Shultz family. - Posted by: Ronald Smith (Friend and Fellow Church Council Member) on: Dec 29, 2011
