ELEANOR GAJADHARSINGH (nee REICHARDT) 1935 - 2011 Peacefully, on December 27, at Victoria General Hospital, with her family at her side, Eleanor passed away. She is survived by her husband Carl, sons Adam and Ian, plus two brothers: Michael (Loretta), Frank (Margaret) and a sister, Ida Backman (Bill), many nieces, nephews and her dear childhood friend, Gisele Page (Tom) and many others. She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and Carl, and her sister and brother-in-law, Caroline and Paul Bedard. Eleanor was born and raised in St. Boniface and Norwood. Her passion, growing up, was music and show biz , and she pursued these goals by studying voice and piano, singing with the Good Companions, a singing group, for over 50 years. She performed at Rainbow Stage, directed church choirs, and directed musical productions for St. Mary's CYO. She spent many years working at the CBC, mostly in the music library, but also enjoyed producing a music variety radio program called Medium Rare . She was also an adventurer, traveling to Europe with a friend when she was 21, spending three years as a missionary in what was then Rhodesia, running a coconut plantation with her husband (Carl), and pulling up roots with her family to start a new life in Tampa, Florida, where they prospered for 16 years. Her main focus, however, has always been family, and she was devoted to her husband and two sons. Extended family gatherings were often held at their home, and whether it was a reenactment of the final meal on the Titanic, or the annual Hungarian tradition of money buns on January 6, happy times were always to be had, with good food, music and fun. Eleanor's talent, hard work, humour and goodness were an inspiration to her family and friends, and she will be sorely missed. Her funeral will be held Friday, December 30, 12:00 noon, at St. Bernadette Parish, 820 Cottonwood Ave.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Eleanor was always smiling and ready to entertain. Whenever we visited Winnipeg from our home in Ottawa, she and Carl opened their doors and hearts, regaling us with laughter over tales of the family. The world is a sadder place without her and we will never forget her warmth, compassion and infectious laughter. All our prayers and warm love to Carl, and the boys. • Eleanor was our cousin and our "big sister." Susan and I remember the good days when Eleanor would visit our family either on her way to another global adventure or on her way back from one. We counted the days until she arrived for a visit and eagerly waited to learn about her latest trip with her friend Marg Pratt and what she did and saw. She was an open window to our own senses of adventure. We remember her sense of humour, she loved a good joke, and her infectious laugh. She is already greatly missed by her eastern family, sole surviving Aunt Anna, cousins Richard (Lynda) Dundas and Susan Budd (John). Our sincere condolences go to sons Ian and Adam, and husband Carl. We will always remember her. - Posted by: Richard Dundas (Cousin) on: Dec 29, 2011

  • I only met Eleanor a few times but she was a lovely person. You have my condolences. - Posted by: Stan Ringold (Renee's husband) on: Dec 29, 2011
