ALAN KALMAR Alan passed away at his home in Winnipeg, MB on Friday, December 23, 2011. Alan was born in Steinbach, MB on February 8, 1968. He leaves to mourn his loss his parents George and Gladys Kalmar, his two sisters Andrea (Tim) and Angela (Mike), his nephew Brennan, two nieces Cassidy and Madison, aunts and uncles, cousins, many friends, co-workers and anyone who had the privilege of meeting him. Alan began school at Pine Creek Elementary where he skipped Grade 3 because he found it too easy. As a result, he achieved his high school diploma one year early in 1985 at Shevchenko School in Vita, MB. During his high school years, he spent some of the summer holidays piling bales for his uncle and also worked at the poultry farm down the road. Immediately after high school, he earned a diploma at Herzing Career College in Computer Programming. Alan gained employment with Credit Union Central of Manitoba where he built his career from computer operator to supervisor of computer operations. In the past two years, the computer operations division was transferred to IBM, where he worked for the remainder of his life. Alan was a fiercely loyal, huge-hearted, modest, intensely protective and loving person who could always be counted on to have great conversations on the phone and in person. He always put other people's needs ahead of his own. He loved animals and greatly missed his dog Buttons. Alan was quite the joker who loved to do voice impressions. Some of his favourite voice impressions were Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sean Connery, Ronald Reagan and various female voices. He loved to answer the phone in any number of these voices and others, just to make the caller think they had the wrong number. He was well known for his endless practical jokes, quick wit, hilarious facial expressions and unforgettable chuckle. Alan was a very gifted teacher. He spent countless hours patiently teaching his sisters some handy tricks on how to throw and to hit a baseball, how to excel in badminton and in ping pong as well as in hockey. He loved all sports and especially admired Guy Lafleur of the Montreal Canadiens. Alan had a great ability to use logic and deductive reasoning to trouble shoot mechanical problems. He was self-taught in car repair and many people came to him to have their vehicles repaired and tuned up. His prized possessions were his baby blue Cadillac from Aunty Elma and Uncle Adam and his black 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix. Alan, the generous way you treated people will forever be remembered and etched into our hearts. Funeral services for Alan will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 31 at Vita Funeral Home located at 256 Railway Avenue in Vita, MB. A lunch will follow the service. Interment will be held at the Menisino Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • Remember him with a smile today, He was not one for tears Reflect instead on memories Of all the happy years. Recall to mind the way he spoke And all the things he said His strength, his stance, The way he walked Remember these instead. The good advice he'd give us His eyes that shone with laughter So much of him that never dies But lives on, ever after. He was a man of honesty, Integrity and pride. Important then, the way he lived Not the way he died. If a tear should fall today Perhaps it shall be shed For the many years without him here That still lie far ahead. - Posted by: Doug and Noreen (aunt and uncle) on: Oct 18, 2012

  • I worked with Al at Credit Union Central, he was my mentor & friend, and I'll always remember our long phone conversations, he would make a point of calling monthly while we lived in Victoria, BC, and he would always make a point of calling me on my birthday, he said he would never forget since it was the same day as his mom's. We talked about everything from aliens to the origins of the universe...life basically. We shared many parties, some disputes at work - where he always "had my back", and ahhh the practical jokes, we'd always team up to torment other members of our shift... we always referred to those times as "the good ol' days" We love you buddy, you will always remain as one of my best friends, you will be missed terribly, and cherished in our memories. • Alan and I were huge Montreal Canadiens fans and would often 'debate' with the leaf fans during our lunch hours. He will be missed. - Posted by: Larry Bilawsky (friend from Vita school) on: Jan 05, 2012

  • I had the fortune to start my career with Al. He was a gifted, patient teacher and always had the time to help me or answer my many questions. You will be missed Al, you treated everybody with respect and kindness and you always thought of others before yourself. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Murray Leckie (Co-worker) on: Jan 04, 2012

  • Alan kept my old Accord purring like a kitten. That in itself was quite a feat. He never gave up if there was a problem to be solved. He was a great guy. - Posted by: Fred Johnson (co-worker, friend) on: Jan 03, 2012

  • Our Dear Sweet Big Al! We cannot believe you are gone. I cherish the 18 years I was blessed to know you and work with you. Thank you for your laughter and kindness. Saraya misses her Uncle Al too! Peace my friend! - Posted by: Tanya (Friend) on: Jan 03, 2012

  • I still can't believe Alan's gone. I was so proud to call him my cousin because he was such a great guy and a hottie with a full head of hair in his 40's! He always protected us younger ones from a certain cousin who liked to pick on us, the family knows who I'm talking about. I'm really gonna miss bonding over our love of the grand prix's and eating apples in your backyard. I really wish we hadn't put off that game of pool. We always thought we'd have another day.....you'll always be in my heart Alan. Even in your passing you've helped me as you've motivated me to live my life and follow my dreams now, not later. RIP P.S. I'm trying to convince my parents the best way of donating to the humane society is to let me adopt a pet. Maybe you can help me out from your side a little! - Posted by: Melissa Stone (cousin) on: Jan 03, 2012
