Date of Passing: Dec 31, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBEN ZION BROWNSTONE Peacefully on December 31, 2011, Ben Brownstone passed away after a short illness at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 91. He is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Brownstone, in 2004, and his brother Yude who died in the Second World War in France. He leaves to mourn his children, Ellen and Brian; his beloved grandson, Garret; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruthy and Hartley Gale. Benny was born in Winnipeg, was enlisted in the Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1945, married Ruthy in 1944, during the war and together they raised their family, and created and operated Brownstone Furs Ltd. for over 40 years. Ben was acknowledged by the fur industry to be one of the most talented fur designers and cutters in western Canada. Ben's first priority in life was his devotion to his family. Dad was an avid swimmer, golfer, fisherman and generally enjoyed the outdoors while teaching his grandson to appreciate nature. During his retirement, Ruth and Ben spent many happy winters at their home in Delray Beach, Florida, where Dad walked every day on the ocean beach and proudly collected unique seashells. Dad's artistic skills continued in his later years in the form of wood carving, sketching, and jewellery making. Up until the time he developed Alzheimer's disease he also prided himself in keeping physically fit. For the past five years of his life he lived with his daughter and was cared for on a daily basis by his extraordinary caregivers. We extend special gratitude and appreciation to these exceptional individuals who provided Dad with quality care, love and affection throughout his last years of life. Also, many thanks and indebtedness to Drs. Aldor, Embil, Haydey, Shelton, and Mysore for their continuous support which enabled Dad to remain at home with the best care possible. A graveside service was held for Ben on January 3, 2012, at Rosh Pina Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba in Ben's memory.
