Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS JOSEPH JOHNSON 1924 - 2012 Peacefully on January 7, 2012, at Deer Lodge Centre, Douglas Joseph Johnson went to his eternal rest. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Mina, daughters Naomi Johnson, Laurel (Ron) Gerelus, Marni (Ernie) Penner, sons Geoff (Nelly) Johnson, Blair (Carolyn) Johnson, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Joyce Dheere. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Ron and Maude Johnson, brother Ken Johnson, and sisters, Maureen Lanoway and Mona Haselhan. Doug was born in Winnipeg on July 14, 1924. He grew up on the family farm near Sanford, and then enlisted in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War. Upon his return, Doug married Mina and together they raised their family. In addition to farming, Doug drove a school bus for over 35 years and was very active in many aspects of the community. These included involvement with the Sanford Legion Branch 171, Sanford United Church, Sanford Credit Union, Mandan Manor, Sanford Cenotaph, School Board, and the History Book Committee. Doug spent many hours maintaining local curling and hockey rinks, as well as coaching hockey and baseball. His favourite sport was curling. Doug had a fond love of wildlife and waterfowl, which led to a wide variety of animals on the farm. A memorial service will be held at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff at Carman Memorial Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre, as well as the volunteers at the Palliative Care Unit in Carman. The family is also grateful to those who provided transportation for Mina to visit Doug. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Carman Memorial Hospital, Box 610, Carman, MB R0G 0J0 or Sanford United Church, Box 35, Sanford, MB R0G 2J0.
