DAVID ALBERT BARIBEAU It is with sadness that we announce the passing of David on January 5, 2012 at Grace Hospital. David is survived by his wife Millicent; sister Grace and son Joe; brother Paul; nephew Mark (Jocelyn and three sons); niece Debra (David Houle and two children, Ryan and Carly); and other family members Belva and Charlie Steeple (Winnipeg), Albert Hilton (Harrington, PQ), and Rhonda and Bruce Cook. David is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Daisy Baribeau; brother Vincent; sisters Margaret and Dorothy; aunt Rose Baribeau of Kenora, ON where she lived her entire life. David was born on February 14, 1930. He attended Winnipeg Schools and graduated from grade 11. He then started his flying career. He was only 16 when he started taking flying lessons from Charlie Graceffo in Winnipeg. He was one of the youngest pilots when he got his Private License. Those were very lean years in the flying business. He flew for Quirk Airways (Winnipeg), then Tom Lamb of Lamb Airways in Northern Manitoba (Churchill, Gillam and Lynn Lake). In 1951 David got his Commercial License. These flying jobs gave him enough experience and he began working for Trans Canada Air Lines as a lead mechanic for five years. He was also a Technical Instructor. Over the years he also flew for Tom Hanaway, Bristol Aircraft and Rusty Myers in Fort Frances. He spent many years flying as he loved the profession. In October 1956, Dave and Millie bought an American Fly-In Camp in Northern ON. This was in the Upper Manitou Lake and Lower. It was a beautiful crystal clear lake and Millie fell in love with it. They owned and operated Camp Baribeau for 26 years and met with many fine American and Canadian fishermen. Dave still flew our own J-3 cub., then later on the Stinson. After selling their camp, they farmed for three years in the Prawda area. But the call of the lake area was still with them. They then got their home on Black Sturgeon Lake in North West Ontario and lived there for 21 years. David was also one fine artist and painted some beautiful outdoor pictures in oils. A special thank you to Henry Harel, Dorothy Britton, Joseph and Beth Kikukawa, Anne and Glenn Ismond, Bertie, and Ginger. We would also like to thank the St. Boniface Hospital, Grace Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Interment and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 982-7550

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Dave was a wonderful friend and co-pilot. We enjoyed many vacations at Camp Baribeau with Dave and Millie and enjoyed their visits to JackPine Lodge. Mel and Dave knew each other since the early 60's and shared a mutual love and affinity for aviation and aircraft. We will remember him as a kind, compassionate, hard working, gentle man. He was very wise and loved the outdoors. He always had an answer for you and was as calm as the gentle waters of Lake Manitou. He will be missed. - Posted by: Mel and Lois Hurdle, Debbie Kolaski Wendy Haynes (Family Friends) on: Jan 11, 2012

  • Shortly after Baribeau's purchased our first camp on Black Sturgeon Lake, our daughter Virginia was doing her Aeronautics badge for Girl Guides. Dave was so patient with her and answered not only the questions she asked but so much more. His kindness and enthusiasm for flying was appreciated. - Posted by: Cynthia Lone Fisher () on: Jan 11, 2012

  • Dave and I worked together as engineers. He was an extremely talented person and shared his knowledge openly. We lost an aviation great when Dave passed on. - Posted by: Hartley Dueck (Friend and former co-worker) on: Jan 10, 2012
