GEORGINA (JEAN) BURNS November 20, 1923 - January 8, 2012 Jean passed away at the Victoria General Hospital on Sunday, January 8. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Margaret and her brother Jim. She is survived by her goddaughter, Barbara Masterman and Barb's husband, Dave Moore. Jean served in the RCAF (Womens Division) during the Second World War. Though born in Vancouver, she chose Winnipeg as her home after the war, working for many years at Stelco as an executive secretary. She was a charter member and past president of the XANA (Ex-Army-Navy-Air Force) PBW (Business Professional Women's) Club (now disbanded). She enjoyed the many good friendships that developed through all these activities. In the early 1950s, Jean volunteered for Marymound School. She later volunteered at Children's Hospital until she became disabled and had to give it up. However, Jean continued to help by knitting preemie outfits for the hospital's nursery when she could no longer volunteer at the hospital. Jean did not let her disabilities prevent her from traveling. Always independent and adventurous, she went on many cruises where she made several enduring friendships. Each winter Jean loved to head to Victoria, BC for a month or more as she looked forward to seeing the flowers and being able to get around in her power wheelchair without the snow to bog her down! Two train trips through the Rockies and a trip to Churchill to see the beluga whales were special adventures Jean cherished. In later years Jean was thankful to have the companionship of a church friend, Elizabeth, for two trips, and Barb for others. Music was very important to Jean. She enjoyed singing with various groups during the war, and after, in church choirs, soloing with many well-known conductors over the years. Jean had a standing date with Barb for every Rainbow Stage production over many years. Jean was pleased to be a member of Crescent Fort Rouge United Church and felt she had found a church family there. Jean was adopted by several families over the years, becoming JB to the Clarkes, AJ to the Mastermans, and Auntie Jean to the Kimbles. She will be greatly missed. Barb and Dave would like to thank all those who visited Jean over the past few years, when she was more limited in her ability to get out and about. Our thanks also to the staff at Lions Place, home for Jean for 22 years, as well as the staff at Misericordia Place and the Victoria Hospital for their care. Cremation has occurred, and at Jean's request, there will be no formal service. Her ashes will be placed in the Memory Garden at Crescent Fort Rouge UC in the spring. Donations to the Children's Hospital Foundation, CE501 840 Sherbrook St. Winnipeg MB, R3A 1S1 would be appreciated.
