EVELYN FRANCES SIMPSON BENNETT 1916 - 2011 On December 22, 2011 on her 95th birthday, Evelyn Bennett died in Winnipeg ten days after suffering a stroke at her home. Born in Belleville, Ontario on December 22, 1916 to Oscar George Simpson and Sarah Jane Dumbleton, Mom spent a happy childhood in Belleville and Kingston. On September 21, 1940, she married Clifford Jones Bennett whom she first met at her father's outdoor skating rink in Belleville. The young couple soon moved to Sudbury, Ontario, where Dad worked as an underground miner with the International Nickel Company for almost 40 years. There they raised a family of two boys, C. Gary and Richard E. (Dick) Bennett. Mom willingly supported Dad's love for baseball and the piano. In 1990 they moved to Winnipeg. Mom loved to travel, watch a good movie, read, swim, and grow flowers. A child of the Great Depression, she also learned the discipline of managing money well. Full of common sense and bountiful faith, she and Dad were pioneer members of the Sudbury Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) since their baptism in 1952. Their marriage was later solemnized for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in August 1960. Dad passed away in August 1991 and is buried in Orem, Utah. She was also predeceased by her siblings Alice Wardhaugh, Bertha Hochmuth, Albert George Simpson, and Doris Thurber. Besides her two sons and their wives, Mary (Babcock) and Patricia (Dyer), she is survived by ten grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her funeral was held on January 3 in Orem but a memorial service will also be held in her honour in Winnipeg at 11:00 a.m. on January 21, 2012 at the LDS Chapel at 44 Dalhousie Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. We wish to thank the wonderful nurses and doctors on 4th South at the Victoria General Hospital for their kind and devoted care during Mom's darkest hour.
