Hannibal could often be found on the rink, the golf course, or in a favourite local hangout. You knew when Doug was in the room. He was known for his opinions, wit, generosity, stories, sweet tooth, and passion for things that mattered to him. He always enjoyed good food, and glass of good red wine. Smitty, you will be missed and always remembered... A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, January 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue. Cremation has taken place with interment will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doug's name to the City of Winnipeg Animal Services Agency or to CancerCare Manitoba. I'm gonna miss a very good friend, shared many laughs. Dougie was my very good neighbour at the trailer park in Winnipeg Beach way back. He was famous for saying...Ya, I'll pay 50 percent on that, whether it was firewood, beers. He would pick me up at work for an apparent"job interview", but really just to go out for lunch. miss you Smitty - Posted by: leslie hjorleifson (friend) on: Jan 28, 2012

Sorry that I was not able to participate in the celebration of Smitty' s life on January 26. I was not in Winnipeg at the time. As most people know, Smitty and I had a special relationship. It is to him that I owe my treasured membership in the Winnipeg Steelers hockey team. To this day I am amazed that he convinced the real hockey players to let me play at it with them. - Posted by: Sidney Green (Friend) on: Jan 27, 2012

It is with great sorrow that I was informed that Doug Smith passed away. Bev, I send you & your loved ones my love & deepest sympathy. I regret I will not be able to attend the Thursday memorial as I am out of the country. I first got to know Doug Smith in his offical capacity as "Inspector" when I was appointed Chair of the Manitoba Film Classication Board in 2000. Doug, as the rest of the MFCB staff, was supportive of the new board & me as chair and I could always rely on him to assist me when it came to complaints, inspections, etc. and provide essential background information that I required to do my job. Doug always worked very hard to ensure that the board was able to fulfill its mandate. He had a thorough knowledge of the act and inspections were numerous & inspection reports were detailed & well written. Requests for information were always back to me in record time. Doug was a dedicated civil servant who did his job effectively and brought to the board a sense of humour & a big heart that we will all dearly miss. While most of my relationship with Doug was professional, I did have the opportunity to play golf with him at Clear Lake. He was an avid skilled golfer & I play once a year but he made it a great game for me that I fondly remember and I and all board members will miss him deeply as a friend.
