COLONEL (RET'D) DOUGLAS LUDLOW OSTJ, CD 1930 - 2012 Unexpectedly on January 31, 2012 Douglas Ludlow was called Home to Our Heavenly father from his residence at St. Norbert Personal Care Home. Douglas was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England on July 3, 1930 and was predeceased by his father Herbert George Ludlow, mother Daisy Emily Atkins-Cook, and sister Jean Mary Ruddle Styles. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Aline Ludlow (nee Irvine), his children Kathleen, Gillian (Ron), Bruce and Megan; grandchildren Kara (Adrian), Jaime, Ryan, Kirk, Willow and Jesse as well as his great-grandson Hayden. He also leaves in England, two cherished nieces Rosemary (Les) Webb and Alison Styles, and great-niece Emily. Douglas will also live on in the memories of his extended family including the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders as well as numerous friends and colleagues. Douglas grew up in War-time England and enlisted in the British Army in July 1948. He immigrated to Canada, August 1951. In 1955, he enrolled in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada as a second Lieutenant. In 1965 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel upon being appointed commanding officer of the Camerons in January 1965 and served in that position until August 1969. After that date he held many various positions with the Camerons and in 1973 was promoted to the rank of Colonel. Eventually in 1993, he was appointed Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of his regiment, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and served with distinction until December 2008. Douglas was lucky to realize his dream job as Commandant/CEO and a Former Chairman of the Board of Governors, of The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Division in 1998 but was reluctantly forced to retire in 2004 due to the constraints of Parkinson's disease. Prior to that from the years of 1951 to 1993 Douglas held various jobs in sales and management with such notable companies as W.J. Bell Paper (Toronto); Wm. E Coutts (Hallmark) in Winnipeg and Greater Winnipeg Cablevision (25 years). Douglas has had numerous affiliations with organizations such as The Army Cadet League of Canada, St. Paul's Anglican Church, Canadian Infantry Association, St. John's Ambulance and several others, too numerous to list. Douglas was a Gentleman through and through, he lived his life with humour, passion and compassion. He put his all into everything he did. The family wishes to thank the staff at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home. The Commissionaires summed him up beautifully when they wrote: Thank you Thank you for your Leadership Thank you for your Guidance Thank you for your Humanity Dad you will forever be in our hearts. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, February 6, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church Fort Garry, 830 North Drive. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Doug's name instead to either Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada Regimental Foundation Minto Armoury, 969 St. Mathews Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 0J7 or St. Paul's Anglican Church Fort Garry, 830 Point Rd., Winnipeg, MB R3T 0Y6.
