HANNAH STEINDEL Hannah Steindel passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital on Sunday, February 14, 2012 at the age of 96 years. Hannah was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, David, her parents, Passy (Selig) and Benjamin Moscovitch, her brothers, Sydney Moss and Norman Moss and sisters, Laura Rosen, Esther Herscovitch, Irene Gunn and Evelyn Silver. Hannah will be remembered by her sons, Sam (Karen) and Gordon (Kathy Cobor), her grandchildren, Maury (Rachel) and Marissa and most cherished great-grandson, Aaron. Hannah is also survived by her sister, Ruth Gutkin, sister-in-law, Evelyn (Don) Golden, as well as many nieces and nephews. Born in St. Boniface, Hannah was a serious piano student, eventually performing at the Capital Theatre. After graduating from St. John's Tech she worked in the clothing industry and then attended business college leading to a brief career with the provincial government. After marrying David in 1941, Hannah focused on homemaking and raising her family, while still making time to volunteer with Hadassah, Pioneer Women and the National Council of Jewish Women. Hannah was an active member at the Rosh Pina Synagogue for many years and also enjoyed attending services at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Hannah would often participate in services by chanting the Haftorah or reading from the Torah, skills that she developed late in her full life. Hannah enjoyed cycling and playing tennis with David through much of their marriage. In later years they would pass many pleasant hours together attending musical events, walking in Kildonan Park, gardening, and playing Scrabble and bridge with friends. They frequently travelled as well as wintered in Palm Springs for over 20 years. Hannah was a very determined and inquisitive individual, with a near insatiable thirst for learning. May her memory be a blessing. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 17 at Congregation Etz Chayim, officiated by Rabbi Larry Lander and Tracy Kasner-Greaves. Pallbearers were Hannah's sons, Sam and Gordon, grandchildren Maury and Marissa, and family friends, Ed Calnitsky and Jerry Pritchard. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of the Grace Hospital for their kind care during the past three months. If desired, donations may be made in Hannah's memory to The Hannah and David Steindel Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba (477-7525) or to the charity of one's choice.
