JOSEPH (JOE) ZBITNEW December 24, 1926 - January 14, 2012 With great sadness we announce the passing of Joe, age 85, at Nanaimo Regional Hospital, family by his side. Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, son of Wasil and Dora (Surkan) Zbitnew, eldest of six siblings. Survived by his wife Josie; son Gregory; daughter Linda Sundevic; grandchildren, Jaman Lloyd-Zbitnew, Chad Sundevic and Nathan (Kristen) Sundevic; and many extended family. Joe began teaching at age 16 in Saskatchewan. His career in education took the family to Ontario, Manitoba and back to Saskatchewan; each move a promotion and new adventure. In Manitoba, Joe spent nine years as Area Superintendent, Frontier School Division. Joe and Josie moved to Qualicum Beach, BC twenty-two years ago. A man with a kind and thoughtful nature, he had the natural ability to tell a joke that brought smiles and laughter, and put people at ease. Known among his collegues and friends as a man with steadfast principles, Joe was well liked and respected by school boards, teachers, students and community organizers. A Celebration of Life is being held in Parksville, BC at Yates Funeral Home on Saturday, February 18 at 2:00 p.m. Those interested in making a donation in Joe's memory may do so to the charity of their choice.
