CAROL LYNN CORTHEY (VERNIE) (nee QUICKENDEN) 1964 2012 With deep sadness we announce the passing of Carol Lynn Corthey (Vernie) Nee Quickenden. Carol's courageous determination, spirit and humour were unwavering as she fought her battle against cancer. Carol passed away peacefully at home with loved ones by her side on Monday, February 13, 2012. Carol was born in Winnipeg, MB on July 7, 1964 to Margaret and Henry Quickenden. Carol grew up in the Cresentwood area of Winnipeg and enjoyed spending summers at the family cabin at West Hawk Lake. After graduation from Grant Park High school in 1982, she began a career in the hospitality industry. In 2006, Carol escaped the city for country life. With excitement and eagerness Carol learned to live off the land, becoming an avid gardener and naturalist. She loved processing the fruits of her labour in the fall. Inspired by her new found surroundings, she became an amateur photographer. Carol's new found hobbies brought her to Oak Hammock Marsh where she was employed as a server at the interpretive center café. Carol loved sitting by the woodstove reading a book in her sunroom while listening to the sounds of the Frog's croaking in the ponds of her backyard. She could also be seen chasing birds around the yard trying to capture that perfect picture. Carol will be lovingly remembered by her parent's Marg and Hank, brother Rob, husband Len Vernie, stepdaughter Cara (Zach) and many, many friends. Our greatest appreciation to Dr. Joel Gingerich and Marie Alkana (St. Boniface Cancer Care Pain Clinic), Interlake Homecare Nurses Sandy, Carol, Collette and Sandra for working closely with Len while Carol's wish of passing away at home was achieved. Special thanks to all the home care staff involved in Carol's caretaking and emotional support. We also would like to thank the friends who helped in our time of need. A celebration of Carol's life will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Center or an animal shelter of choice. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website.
