MARGARET JANE (PEGGY) DUBINSKI (nee GILLENDER) Peacefully, on February 22, 2012, Peggy passed away in hospital after a short illness. She is survived by her son Tom, and will be remembered fondly by a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and, in March 2007, by Edward, her husband of more than 50 years. Peggy was the last surviving and youngest of her sisters Irene, Mildred, Jessie and Florence. Peggy was born in Guelph, ON on December 27, 1924, and grew up in that part of Ontario, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec and in Montreal. In the years after the Second World War she moved to Winnipeg, reuniting with Irene who had previously done so. After arriving, Peggy worked in the offices of the Manitoba Power Commission (precursor to Manitoba Hydro). In 1953, she met Ed aboard a train bound for that year's Grey Cup game in Toronto, to watch the Blue Bombers play. Winnipeg lost the game but a romance that would last more than 50 years was ignited, and Peggy and Ed married in July, 1955. A few years later, Peggy quit working for the M.P.C. when Tom was born, but she was far from being inactive. She golfed at Breezy Bend Country Club for decades, where she enjoyed playing countless rounds of golf and socializing with the multitude of friends she and Ed met there. She was an avid curler for many years in the ladies' league at the former Valour Road Curling Club and, in 1981, was a member of the team that represented Manitoba at the senior ladies national championship. Peggy also enjoyed playing bridge regularly with ladies of her neighbourhood, and during the winter at Breezy Bend. Peggy was also a volunteer canvasser for a number of charities and worked annually at the Children's Hospital Book Mart. She enumerated and worked at polling stations for numerous elections. In football season, for 55 years Peggy could be found in Section V of Winnipeg Stadium as a loyal season ticket holder cheering on the Blue Bombers with Ed or Tom. Cremation has been performed. A private ceremony and interment will take place at a future date. An informal reception to commemorate Peggy's life will take place on Friday, March 9, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Breezy Bend Country Club, 7620 Roblin Blvd., Headingley. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Peggy may be made to a charity of one's choice.

  • Our family is saddened by the passing of our friend, Peggy Dubinski. We shared many pleasant memories together. Our sympathy is extended to Peggy's son, Tom - who never gave up, no matter what obstacles he had to endure. Throughout, Tom displayed remarkable courage, care and love, even in the most difficult hours. We know that Peggy would be incredibly proud of the strength and comfort you have shown your mother.
