MOYER HURTIG Moyer Hurtig, suddenly at home on February 26, 2012. Predeceased by his mother and father Dora and Adolph, his sister Joyce (Mickey), and brother Harvey (Lorraine). He is survived by his wife Esther, and sons Avery (grandchildren Liev and Terry), David, and Jeffrey (Katherine) (grandchildren Aaron, Alyssa, and Joel). Pallbearers were Avery Hurtig, David Hurtig, Jeffrey Hurtig, Jack Hurtig, Joel Hurtig, and Jeffrey Gilbert. Born on August 23, 1930, Moyer was raised in Winnipeg's North End. He was active in the Y.M.H.A. and as a Naval Cadet at the H.M.S.C. Chippawa. Summers were spent at Winnipeg Beach surrounded by family and friends, who would remain so important to him throughout his life. Here he first met his wife offering her a ride in the boat he built, with money he earned porting luggage from the summer trains. He graduated Breck Military Academy in Minnesota where he achieved the rank of Captain and played Goalie on the championship Hockey Team. Upon the sudden death of his Father when he was just 19, Moyer began working at A M Hurtig Furs at 262 Portage Ave. Here he worked for almost 50 years, bringing the company to its 88th anniversary. Starting in the late 1960s, he expanded the business by being one of the first to pioneer the export of Canadian Furs to Japan and Korea. He would often surprise the staff of Winnipeg's then few Japanese Restaurants by ordering and conversing in their native language. He served several terms as president of the Winnipeg Fur Guild and was honoured by the Fur Council of Canada for his long years of service and achievements in The Fur Industry. An avid curler, bowler, and golfer he was active in the many leagues and tournaments of the B'nai B'rith and the Glendale Country Club. He also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and was an avid reader. Known for his prowess on the BBQ he was often asked for his special recipes. He was a founding member of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, and was for many years active with the Shriners. One of his proudest accomplishments was putting together a family history and a reunion that brought together relatives from all over North America. In later years, he would winter in Palm Springs, along with many of his life long friends and a good portion of his Poker Group of some 40 years. He delighted in picking oranges and lemons fresh off the trees. Moyer was a warm and loving person filled with a strong zest for life. He will be deeply missed and the memory of his life cherished by all those who knew and loved him.

I have so many loving memories of Moyer coming to stay at my childhood home en route from Japan or on his way to Vegas. He was my dad's best friend and I simply loved hearing their childhood stories. What a team they made. My love goes out to Avery, David and Jeffrey. Your father was a rich man in spirit and had a great time laughing. Love from California, his second home :) Tracey Shiffman - Posted by: Tracey Shiffman (Irv's 2nd daughter) on: Mar 19, 2012

It is impossible to describe in this tribute my relationship with my "brother" Menu. We knew each other since childhood and spend countless days months and years together. There is nobody in my life that I had greater times with. I will miss him and love him always. - Posted by: IRVIN & MARIA SHIFFMAN (LIFE LONG FRIENDS) on: Mar 17, 2012
