ROBERT STEVENSON (BOB) CORBETT July 17, 1926 - March 3, 2012 It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Robert Stevenson Corbett. Peacefully, with his family by his side, Bob left us on March 3, 2012, after a brief battle with cancer. Bob will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Lillian, daughter Sandra Martin (David), son Neil of Delta, BC, and his beloved grandsons, Travis, Brett, James and Samuel. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Wilson and Jane Corbett, and his brothers, Peter and Jackie. Bob was born and educated in the Verdun area of Montreal, Quebec. In 1943, he entered the employ of Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) for a short period before joining the R.C.A.F. in 1944. He served in the R.C.A.F. for nine months when he, along with several thousand others, was released due to a surplus of Air Crew. Bob immediately joined the army and served with the R.C.H.A. (Artillery) until the end of the hostilities. He was then transferred to the Canadian Provost Corp (Military Police) until his discharge in 1947. After his discharge, Bob returned to his career with CSL in Montreal. In 1964, he was transferred to Winnipeg where he held the position of Marketing and Sales Manager for Manitoba and Saskatchewan until his retirement in 1982. Never one to be idle, Bob then joined the staff at the Manitoba Society of Seniors (MSOS), as Director of Special Events as well as serving on their board of directors. In 1990, he was very proud to be recognized for his efforts in helping to bring the MSOS 55 Plus Games to Flin Flon. Bob retired from MSOS in 1993. Throughout his life, Bob was an active community volunteer. He served as President of the Silver Heights Community Club and President of the Assiniboia Concert Band. He also served as a board member for the Manitoba Band Association and was awarded with an Honorary Lifetime Membership for his contribution to the organization. Bob was a member of the Transportation Committee of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce for 10 years. He was also a member of No. 4 Royal Canadian Legion in St. James as well as Unit 283 of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans (ANAF). Bob and Lillian spent their winter months happily vacationing in Palm Desert and Hawaii, golfing and making many life-long friends along the way. Bob's greatest enjoyment and satisfaction came from his family and from his music. Bob played trombone with numerous organizations over the years including the Royal Montreal Regiment Band as band sergeant, the CFL Montreal Alouette Marching Band, the Assiniboia Concert Band, the Belgium Club Band, and was a founding member of the Executive Orchestra'. In 2002, Bob received the Bob Day Award for his outstanding contribution to community music. Bob's family and friends will forever remember him for his ready sense of humour, his one-line quips and his Grandad jokes . A Celebration of Bob's Life followed by a reception will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at A.N.A.F. #283, located at 3584 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Bob was the man that introduced me to the Manitoba Society of Seniors in 1989. Bob was a great guy and certainly made a considerable contribution to this organization and my time that I spent there. - Posted by: Charles Cruden (friend) on: Mar 20, 2012

  • I served Bob and Lillian coffee for a few years. I remember Bob as 'respectful' yet observant. It is interesting to me that we can see people on a daily basis yet never know their 'life story.' Reading Bob's life bio gave me inspiration to develop another character in the novel that I am writing. Thanks Mr. Corbett! I'll do my best to honour your character. • Bob was the first person I sat next to in a band in Winnipeg. His gentle wisdom and exceptional playing ability guided me to go on to greater things. I miss you, Bob, and I hope to become a mentor like you. - Posted by: Chris Lalonde (Friend) on: Mar 06, 2012

  • Dear Auntie Lil, Sandra and Neil: We were so saddened to hear of Uncle Bob's passing and extend our deepest sympathies. You are certainly in our thoughts and prayers. I have many memories of Uncle Bob - all of which make me smile. Take good care, Carole (Aziz) Daoust and family - Posted by: Carole (Aziz) Daoust (Friend) on: Mar 06, 2012

  • It was Mr. Corbett's passion for playing that encouraged me the most when I was young and had just started playing the trombone. As my section leader in the Assiniboia Students Band Association, I learned more from him than I ever would from any of my future teachers. I tried my best to pass his knowledge and enthusiasm on to my son when he took up the trombone. - Posted by: Jim Beatty () on: Mar 06, 2012
