LAURIE ANNE OLESON (née SMITH) Woman much missed, how you call to me, call to me, Saying that now you are not as you were ... Those words by Thomas Hardy evoke as much as any poem ever has the pain of lost love. Hardy wrote them for his dead wife, but they have a far larger application than that. They apply in any relationship where a deep and abiding love exists - among sisters and brothers, parents and children, among friends so close they become like family. Laurie's life transcended all these limitations. She brought love with her wherever she went. She is a woman who will truly be much missed. Laurie, who died March 2, at the early age of 62, had a multi-faceted career. She worked variously as a doughnut cook, an aide at the St. Amant Centre, and in real estate. She was a beer waitress, a bartender and manager of the Winnipeg Press Club. She was also for several years editor of the Icelandic Weekly newspaper Lögberg-Heimskringla. Through it all she was always a wife, a mother, a sister and a friend. Laurie was predeceased by her son Kristofer in 2010. She is survived by her husband, Tom, her daughters Jennifer and Kaitlyn and son Michael. She was also predeceased by her sister Roberta Miller and survived by her siblings Iris, Shelly, David and Brian Smith, numerous nieces and nephews and close friends Robert Saunders and Marie Ottenbreit. Although Laurie will be much missed, at her own request no funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Amant Centre.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • For the brief time I was a member of her family, Laurie was the most kind friendly and loving woman. And growing up with so many siblings, all at some point needing their oldest sister. It couldn't have been easy. The stories I used to hear from Bobbie always amazed me. The fact that she herself had such a large family can only mean she was comfortable with so many dependent on each other. She and her love of her life leaving this world in such a close period of time, renews my belief in a much higher and yet loving power watching over our lives. - Posted by: Jerry D. • Laurie and I are....were....first cousins, her Dad, my wonderful Uncle Harry, was my Mom's brother. When we were kids Laurie and her siblings would come out to my home town, Lundar, for visits. I always thought it must be exciting to live in the city like they did, but Laurie later told me that she loved those trips out to Lundar. I was always closer to Laurie than the rest of her family; I guess because we kept in touch over the years. It didn't matter how much time had gone by, when we started to chat it was like we had just spoken the week before. That's how Laurie was, no airs about her, just a very friendly. open. beautiful woman. I will miss Laurie very much. My heart goes out to Tom and her kids. I know they will really miss her. - Posted by: Janet Donahoe (Paulson) (Cousin) on: Mar 17, 2012

  • I lived through the AIDS epidemic and I work in a nursing home, so I do not skip the obituaries when I read the Freep cover to cover. This obituary is beautifully written, and the picture shows a beautiful woman whose beauty is more than skin deep. I can tell from Laurie's life story that I would have fallen for her in 5 minutes, and I know her husband Tom must be broken hearted. My deepest sympathies to Laurie's family and friends. - Posted by: Rich North (A fellow traveler in The Heart of the Continent.) on: Mar 13, 2012

  • I will miss you forever - Posted by: Iris (sister) on: Mar 12, 2012

  • Laurie and I spent a weekend together driving our daughters and their friends to a basketball tournament in Brandon. We had such a good time together and she was so easy to spend time with. I will never forget the many laughs we had in Brandon. - Posted by: Charlene Cohen (friend) on: Mar 11, 2012
