THOMAS GIBSON With his nephew at his side, Tom departed this life on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, concluding a 19-month journey that included pancreatic and colon cancer (with two major surgeries), a massive heart attack and many health issues. He is survived by his nephew Bradley J. Curran, niece Pamela LaDelle (nee Curran) and her children Melissa (Reuben), Lynelle and Ferral; cousins Winnie Bennett, Richard and Sandra Bennett and Steve and Alice Bennett and their families, as well as numerous relatives in Australia. Tom was predeceased by his father Samuel and mother Olivia Florence, sister Winnifred Rebecca, brother-in-law William A. Curran and nephew-in-law Mitchell LaDelle. Tom was born January 31, 1932 in Winnipeg, to Irish immigrant parents, and learned how to stretch a dollar through difficult early years. Following graduation from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute, Tom commenced his electrician apprenticeship in 1951 and received his certificate in January 1956 from Canadian National Railways. There, he worked at Symington Shops until taking early retirement in 1987 from his position as Supervisor. His passions were horse racing, golf and football. Tom had eclectic taste in entertainment: Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello movies; 92 CITI-FM, Janis Joplin, The Supremes; Big Bang Theory and Desperate Housewives. Tom was an avid reader, and hoofed it to the Millennium Library for many years. He never needed a calculator, having a great aptitude for math. Funeral service will take place 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 12 at Bardal Funeral Home Crematorium, 843 Sherbrook Street, with interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue. Our deepest thanks to Dr. Jeremy Lipschitz of Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Gary Harding of CancerCare Manitoba, and the staff of Health Sciences Centre, particularly the ER and MICU for their compassion and care, and to the Home Care team for their months of good work which allowed Tom to remain at home until the end. In lieu of flowers, donations to CancerCare Manitoba in Tom's memory would be most appropriate.

Sunday afternoon card games on Elgin Ave. Tom used to come to our place on Friday evenings where we would spend time together. When Tom was in Toronto visiting, I used to work for Wilson's where we made him up his own golf clubs that were an inch longer than standard because he was so tall. I am sure he still has them. A fine gentleman and good friend. Our sympathies to the family. - Posted by: Jim & Virginia Ferguson (Old friend and neighbor) on: Mar 11, 2012

Uncle Tom used to come out to Toronto to go to Woodbine race track to enjoy the horses. I have fond memories of him when he would spend time with my parents and my brothers and sisters while he visited. We communicated the past years at Christmas time. He will be missed.
