NORMAN DAVID HAWORTH It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Norman David Haworth on February 18, 2012 after a brief illness. David was born on August 4, 1930 in Birmingham, England, where his father Walter Norman Haworth was Professor of Chemistry at the University and later to be Sir Norman and a Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. His mother was Violet Chilton Haworth. Because of the threat of heavy bombardment of Birmingham in the Second World War, David was evacuated to Canada and joined the household of Sir Fredrick Banting in Toronto for four years. He returned to Britain in 1944 and continued his education at Shrewsbury School and at the University of Oxford where he was awarded a Demyship at Magdalen College. He graduated with a B.A. in chemistry which was followed by a MSc. at the University of London. In 1956 David married Mary Monica Love and together with their children they moved to Canada. In 1971 David was appointed Information Officer at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in Pinawa, Manitoba where they remained until their retirement in 1995. David had many interests which included self-taught Russian, reading, gardening, camping, listening to classical music, and a good family game of Rummoli! He was very involved in the Catholic Church and was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus. In 2001 David and Monica retired to Nanaimo, B.C. After Monica's passing in 2010, David moved to Maple Ridge to be nearer to his daughters. David is lovingly remembered by his brother Dr. James Haworth and wife Marian, daughter Janet and husband Christopher Lee, daughter Julia, and son Andrew and wife Catherine, and his four grandchildren, Josephine, Tiffany, Brittanie-Anne, and Matthew, as well as many family members in England and Canada. Dad will also be missed by his Good Dog Taffy. A Memorial Service will be held in Nanaimo in July.
