He was 88 years old and in his 64th year of religious profession and 56th year of priesthood. Born in Sillery, QC, January 27, 1924, his mother passed away when he was less than a year old. His aunt Alice, his mother's sister who was a nurse in Willow Bunch, SK, took charge of him. He grew up in Willow Bunch until he left for Manitoba in 1946 for one year of teaching which he enjoyed tremendously in Abbeyville, close to Eriksdale. In 1947 he entered the novitiate of the Clerics of Saint Viator in Rigaud, QC. Following his ordination in 1956, Father Clavet taught at our College in Cormwall, ON until 1963, when he came to St. Joseph College in Otterburne for three years before returning to St. Viator College in Outremont, QC. In 1968, he returned to Manitoba but this time for parish ministry in St. Claude, St. Leon, St. Boniface Cathedral, La Broquerie, Fannystelle and Christ the King from where he retired in 1994, maintaining part time ministry until 2001 when he returned to Quebec for health reasons. The last five-six years were spent at our infirmary in Joliette. Father Gerry left a trail of humour, wit and joy wherever he passed and a limitless number of friends of all ages which really showed when he celebrated his 50th anniversary of religious life in 1999 at Holy Family Parish Hall which proved way too small for the many who wanted to participate. Apart form his religious family, Father Gerry will be remembered by a nephew Michel Clavet (Luciana Garcia Santana), a few cousins and numerous friends. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the chapel of the Congregation located at 450, avenue Querbes, Outremont, QC, on Thursday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m.. Internment will be in the Viatorian Cemetery in Rigaud.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I recall Father Clavet from my days as a student at College de Cornwall. Father Clavet always wore a smile. He was an excellent English teacher and I still recall his vivid interest in Ernest Hemingway. I fondly remembered him over the years and I'm extremely pleased he enjoyed a long life. He must have been a great parish priest. - Posted by: Jean Proulx (Student, College de Cornwall 1958 - 1963) on: Jul 02, 2012

Bernard Rose...un ancien du Collège - Posted by: Bernard Rose (Student) on: May 02, 2012

  • I offer my most sincere sympathy to Camille Légaré and religious CSV family of our beloved Father Gérard during his time here in La Broquerie. He is in God's loving arms now, Theresa Connelly - Posted by: Theresa Connelly (former parishioner of our dear Father Clavet ) on: Mar 16, 2012

  • My sincere sympathies to Pere Clavet's family and extended family. He was a wonderful, kind and jovial man. He always made us smile, no matter the situation, as his love for people and God shone through everything he did. From my childhood in St Claude, to Fannystelle where he baptised two of our children, and beyond, our paths crossed many times. I must say he was always a teacher. He taught us the importance of God's love by example. He was instrumental in helping Fannystelle celebrate 100 years. We will always remember his service to the community. - Posted by: Jeannine Guyot (parisioner) on: Mar 16, 2012

  • I am so saddened to hear of his passing. Quite surreal as I was just thinking about him the other day. He baptized all of my siblings and I in St Leon parish church and he baptized my daughter at Precieux Sang Church in St Boniface over 14 years ago. He has left a legacy of trust in faith. My sincere sympathies to his family mourning his loss. What a wonderful spirited man he was, inspiring unending faith. - Posted by: Diane DeMare ( parishioner ) on: Mar 15, 2012

- Posted by: Marcel Chaput, prêtre (ami) on: Mar 15, 2012

  • We are sorry to hear of the passing of Father Clavet. May God welcome him with open arms. Father Clavet married Jerry and I in St. Leon Manitoba on June 19th 1971. He also baptised our children Tina and Kevin in Manitou, Man. He was a great man with a great sense of humor. He shall be missed by many. Rest in Peace Father. - Posted by: Jerry and Wendy Georges () on: Mar 15, 2012

  • Pere Clavet is my adopted brother! He always said my mother Annette Aquin was his Manitoba Mother. He would always show up for a visit right at supper time unannounced with no invitation! He always knew my mom would be ready to feed them. She always welcomed him with open arms. He was always quite the joker! Gerard! Say hi to mom for me! I'm sure she will welcome you with open arms! Probably feed you as well! - Posted by: Celine Rochon (Adopted sister! ) on: Mar 14, 2012

- Posted by: Luc Legault (former student) on: Mar 14, 2012
