LOUISE FLORENCE CARIOU Unexpectedly, but peacefully, with her family at her side, Louise Florence Cariou (nee Fisette) passed away on March 12, 2012, in Winnipeg. She was 81. Louise will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered, by her six children and their father, her 14 grandchildren, her sisters Jeanne and Alice, nephews, nieces, and friends. Louise was predeceased by her mother Georgiana (nee Joyal), father Joseph, and brother Albert. Born in St. Boniface on April 27, 1930, Louise grew up and attended school in Norwood. After graduating, she continued her studies in laboratory technology and upon earning her certificate began a 40-year career in the field. Louise worked at Central Medical Laboratories as chief medical technologist for many years. She also taught in the medical technology program at Red River Community College, but returned to Central Medical, resuming her post until her retirement in 1991. Louise married childhood classmate Donald ( Meche ) Cariou in 1955. They moved to Edmonton where they had their first three children, Chris, Doug, and Lori (Alec). By 1960 the family moved back to Winnipeg, where Lisa (Darren), Shauna (Ken), and Gerry (Kim) were born. The Carious resettled in Norwood, where the children attended Holy Cross School, the same elementary school as their parents. During her retirement, Louise indulged her passion for history and political science, enrolling in many courses through the University of Winnipeg's Continuing Education program. By 1984, Louise's abiding joy became her grandchildren: Rebecca (Grant), Andrew (Hilary), Monica (Alex), Ben, Emma, Evan, Devon, Rachael, Cole, Justin, Joshua, Clara, Maia, and Matthew. Grandma was a fabulous cook with an incredible wit, a sharp sense of humour, and remains the undisputed Queen of the Scrabble board. Other children who knew Louise loved her sense of fun. Little Grandma had a voracious and genuine interest in their lives, which was affectionately returned in their immense love for her. People who knew our Mom saw her as a fair and fun boss, someone with a sharp intellect who also had a keen love of books and art. Musically and poetically, Louise felt a deep affinity and appreciation for Leonard Cohen. Louise's children gratefully thank the expert and compassionate care of attending physicians Dr. Carmen Hurd, Dr. Brian Gregson, and nursing staff at the Health Sciences Centre. Our family would also like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Ron Maier. A private ceremony honouring Louise's life was held on March 16. In lieu of flowers, kindly send donations to the Autism Society Manitoba or Fort Whyte Alive. Louise's obituary may also be viewed at www.glenlawn.ca, where you may also sign a Book of Condolence. Dance me to the end of love... Leonard Cohen
