Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDNA THOMPSON (nee PETERSON) On March 13, 2012, Edna Thompson passed away at the age of 94 in Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her husband Roy Thompson, her parents Esther and Victor Peterson, brothers Lloyd and Douglas, sisters-in-law Rose and Violet. She is survived by her sister Bernice McCrea, brother Gerald Peterson, nephews David, Del, Murray and niece Dawn, and several grandnieces and nephews. Edna was born on July 5, 1917, the first of five children and grew up on the farm near Kamsack, SK. She attended country school to grade 8 and took grades 9 and 10 by correspondence with the guidance of the local school teacher. For grade 11 she attended Kamsack High School. Her dad died in 1938. Edna loved horses and rode them to school everyday. On weekends Edna and Bernice would try trick-riding like the movie cowboys. She grew up in a lovely community and she was the belle of the ball at the school dances. She took a typing course and worked for the Telephone Company until the cyclone of 1944 destroyed part of the town and wiped out their house and all of the farm buildings. These were trying days for the family. The farm had to be rebuilt and when her mother died the following year, Edna took care of the two younger brothers. After brother Lloyd died in 1947, Edna moved to Winnipeg and her sister Bernice took the youngest brother Gerald into her home. Brother Douglas remained on the farm until his passing. His son, Edna's nephew, Murray Peterson, farms the homestead to this day. After coming to Winnipeg, Edna worked at the St. Regis Hotel. In 1955 she struck out on an adventure, moving to Yellowknife, NWT by herself. She met her husband Roy and they were married in 1956. After Yellowknife, Roy's work took them to Revelstoke, BC, Pine Point, NWT, and to Westlock, AB where Roy passed away in 1988. Edna returned to Winnipeg where she spent her remaining years. Edna was healthy all of her life until dementia took away many things. She spent the last three years at The Riverview Health Centre. Her family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the Riverview CD2 staff for their care and compassion. These are special people. Cremation has taken place. Her remains will be placed beside those of her husband, Roy, in Westlock, AB. On the night of her passing the sky was unusually clear, and three planets shone brightly above her.
