JACQUELINE BUCHANAN (nee OVERWATER) Peacefully, on March 17, 2012 Jackie passed away at the Taché Centre at the age of 84. Jackie was predeceased by her husband Keith, son Ernie, daughter-in-law Jo-Anne, parents Jaapje and Jacobus, siblings Ida, Jake, Ernie, Anne, Beatrice, Betty, Neil and Bernadine. She is survived by sons, Gerard, Gordon (Linda), Neil (Dawnie), daughters Cheryl (Blair) DuGray, Marlene Waite, daughter-in-law Darlene Buchanan, grandchildren Maegan, Jaime and Erin Buchanan, Troy and Reid Buchanan, Cassie and Kristy DuGray, Jennifer, Chad and Jessica Waite, Tamara (Matt) Einfeld, great-grandchildren Owen and Ava Jacqueline, sister Marie Schreyer, brother John (Alice) Overwater, and sister-in-law Irene Overwater. Mom was born on April 21, 1927 spending her youth working on the family farm in Charleswood while attending Pacific Junction then Charleswood School. Mom was an avid bike racer for the Belgian Club in her teens competing in races along with her siblings across southeastern Manitoba. Her involvement in the Belgian Club came as a result of lifelong friendship with the DeBaets family. She started working at Falcon Hardware in 1952 where she met dad. They married in August 1953 living in Charleswood until 1958 when they moved to Fort Rouge. In the 1960s mom was very active in the Catholic Women's League at Our Lady of Victory, at Riverview Community Club spending countless hours volunteering while driving kids to hockey and football games. She was also The Tupperware Lady of Riverview. Her summers were spent at the family cottage at Barrier Bay in the Whiteshell. She was a volunteer at Our Lady of the Whiteshell Church and with the Whiteshell Association where she is an honorary lifetime member. Mom and dad spent their retirement wintering in Apache Junction, Arizona. Through mom and dad's ties in Charleswood, the Belgian Club, Riverview, the Whiteshell and Arizona many lasting friendships were developed. Mom had a heart of gold and a big, beautiful smile to go along with it and will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff on 5C at the Taché Centre for their loving, compassionate care for mom in her final year. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, March 30, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 4588 Roblin Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Taché Centre, 185 Despins St., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2B3.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Jackie was a saint to me. I was a young boy when I showed up at her door. She had 6 kids of her own and a very small house. She welcomed me into their home where I stayed for the summer. I only wish I would have had the chance to thank her Mike Clark. (Friend ) - Posted by: Michael Clark (Friend) on: Nov 19, 2013

  • Keith and Jackie Buchanan were wonderful neighbours and entrusted me when I was 12 with all the kids to babysit. They were not the least upset the night I "lost" one of the kids and were sure he would show up and he did! He was fast asleep the whole time! They were both always kind and supportive towards me growing up. Jackie was always friendly to everyone with her big wave and genuine smile - upbeat and always "on the go"...I will always remember both Jackie and Keith and the Buchanan family fondly. - Posted by: Lorraine (Buchanan babysitter) on: Mar 29, 2012

  • I remember my mom (Jeanne) and dad (George) talking often of their visits to Jackie and Keith and vice versa, and also the strong ties with most of her siblings and particularly with her parents Tante Jaapie and Ome Ko. We wish our sincere condolences to her children and grandchildren and also her remaining siblings. Joe and Maryanne Schers - Posted by: Maryanne (Overwater) Schers (daughter of Jackie's cousin George Overwater) on: Mar 29, 2012

  • My parents were frequent visitors to the Overwater family and I accompanied them. I have just turned 85, so Jackie being 84, was obviously a companion of mine for visits to the Assiniboine Park as youngsters.. Since I have been a missionary in India for 60 years, my relationship with her was through my sister-in-law, Beatrice Overwater. She was always donating gifts to the missions through Beatrice. She was such a genuine, supportive person so my work in India benefitted through her generosity. I know she will continue supporting me from her new heavenly home.
