BERTHA CATHERINE CAIRNS 1923 - 2012 It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Bertha on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at the Victoria Hospital, at the age of 88 years. Left to cherish her memory are her sons Barrie (Pat) and Dale, grandson Dwayne (Jennifer), great-grandchildren Drew, Kayla, Paige and Chase, sisters-in-law Noreen, Fran, Dorothy, Louise, Winnie and Inez, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her parents Willis and Jessie Usher, husband Lloyd, two sisters Lillian and Marguerite and their husbands Sid and Frank, three infant brothers and granddaughter Bridget, as well as numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Mom was born on June 22, 1923 in Waskada, MB. Mom and her two sisters, Lillian and Marguerite, lived and worked on the family farm just north of Waskada. Mom left for Winnipeg at an early age and was employed at Eaton's for a number of years. Mom met Lloyd Cairns shortly after the war and they were married in October of 1947. They had two sons, Barrie Wayne in 1949 and Rodger Dale in 1953. Mom met many new friends while employed at the Zellers Store in East Kildonan. She worked there for 23 years and retired in June of 1988. Mom was an active member of the Prince Edward Legion and was a past Vice President of the branch and past President of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was also past President of the Prince Edward Legion Curling Club as well as a life member. Mom was a very artistic person and produced many beautiful oil paintings. She gave some away to relatives and friends but many remain at the house on Helmsdale Avenue which they purchased in 1957. She had a beautiful singing voice and loved to sing at the church services at Immanuel United Church. A Special Thank You goes out to the staff of the Fifth Floor at the Woman's Pavilion and also the staff on the Fifth Floor of the Misericordia Hospital for taking such wonderful care of mom.
