DR. HARVEY SPIEGEL With great sadness the family of Harvey Spiegel announces his peaceful passing on March 26, 2012 after a brief but courageous battle with brain cancer. Harvey is lovingly remembered by his wife, Deanne and children Jill (Shawn Hank) and Gary (Kim Kujawski), step-grandchildren Kendra (Johnathan Woodbridge), Tyler and Will, step great-grandchild Kristian, and brother Jeffrey (Esther). He was predeceased by his parents, Bessie and Joseph. Harvey will be forever missed. He will always be in the hearts and minds of his family and friends. Harvey was born in Winnipeg in 1942 and was raised in Winnipeg's north end. He attended Champlain Elementary, Machray Jr. High, and St. John's High School. Harvey graduated from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Dentistry in 1968. He was a loving husband and father, a caring and respected dentist and employer, and an avid sports fan. Harvey was a kind and loving person who enjoyed keeping abreast of the news, dancing, the symphony, and attending his dental class reunions. He enjoyed live theatre and the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Last year, Harvey played the role of Mr. Mushnik in a Prairie Theatre Exchange Fundraiser play: Little Shop of Horrors performed by an all-dentist cast. He gave generously to many charities and did little known mitzvahs within the Winnipeg community. Gratitude is extended to the Palliative Home Care nurses and health care aides who provided the care and support that allowed Harvey to die with dignity at home. Funeral services took place at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on Thursday, March 29th with Rabbi Green officiating. Pallbearers were Dean Caplan, David Caplan, Stephen Caplan, Joel Cogan, Jeremy Spiegel, and Joshua Kass. Those wishing to honor Harvey's memory may make donations to CancerCare Manitoba, The Canadian Museum for Human Rights, or to a charity of choice in lieu of flowers.

Remembering Dr Harvey Spiegel on this day. One year since his passing today. A wonderful dentist. RIP - Posted by: Just Remembering A Fabulous Dentist Today () on: Mar 26, 2013

I just found out about the passing of Dr. Spiegel, and was very saddened by this. After having my braces removed by Dr. Baker in 1991, he referred me to Dr. Spiegel. He was very professional, kind, and soft spoken ... Yet I could always make him laugh by saying "I'm sorry that I don't make you any money" as I've never had a cavity or filling or root canal. My deepest sympathies go out to his family. He is definitely missed and will be in my thoughts (as well as his family) forever. I'm proud to have known him. - Posted by: Colleen Fehr (Patient) on: May 22, 2012

My sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy. I started seeing Dr. Speigel when I was 10 and he was at the Boyd Building. He was always kind humble and professional. One time When I went to see him with a toothache (I was in my 20's and was going to start a new job in couple of days.) He insisted that he do a the dental work during his lunch hour so I would not have to miss any time off my new job. Soon after, many of my friends started going to him and he was always thought of very highly in my group of friends. I moved to B.C. a few years later and have never found a dentist to replace him. - Posted by: Brenda Graf (Patient) on: May 03, 2012

Deanne and Family: Mike and I express our deepest sympathy to you and your family on Harvey's passing. It was always a pleasure to visit with Harvey at the lake. No need to tell you he was a great professional and a human being. The world is a better place for having him for such a short time. You can take great solace in what he gave to his family and community. What a legacy. L Mike & Illa Maher - Posted by: Mike & Illa Maher (Friends) on: Apr 26, 2012

WE JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT HARVEY YESTERDAY AND WE ARE DEEPLY SADDENED. HARVEY WAS THE BEST, VERY PROFESSIONAL AND CARING ALL THE TIME. WE WERE PATIENTS FOR OVER 35 YEARS, AND WE HAVE NOT HAD THAT PERSONAL TOUCH SINCE WE LEFT WPG IN 2001. I first met Harvey in the late 1940s at Champlain and I.L. Peretz schools and, until geography separated us 20 years later, we were close, very close friends. "Hav and Mav," our friends labelled us. We shared the rites of passage through puberty, including smoking, Playboy and other mishegash. Harvey was a gentle soul, a mench long before most of us deserved that label. Dear Deanne and family, my deepest sympathy. - Posted by: marvin glass (friend) on: Apr 19, 2012

My deepest sympathies to the family of Dr Spiegel. Dr Spiegel was my dentist for over 30 years. An excellent dentist, a true professional, an honorable man, a good man, a dependable man. There are many compliments that truly apply. I wish he was still with us. - Posted by: Les Kovalik (patient) on: Apr 17, 2012

Dear Deanne and family: I was a classmate of Harvey in dental college from 1964-1968. We had very strict discipline in our training because many of our instructors had military backgrounds . Harvey was a product of that training and although with the rest of us sometimes pushed back in response to that approach it obviously made Harvey that caring, kind dentist that he was. Although we lived in B.C., our reunions of the Class of '68 were so special because even though they were every 5 years they took us back in time to were we left off. We were sorry to miss him at our mini reunion in Kelowna in Sept. 2011. I was at your wedding and reflect now on the faithful husband that he was. I hope my card reached you, as we were traveling to Arizona when we got the news. He was a great Mensch with a good legacy. Shalom, Ed and Marlene Penner - Posted by: Dr. Ed. My sympathies to the family of Dr Spiegel. Dr Spiegel was my dentist for my entire life. My son was also very lucky to have had Dr Spiegel as his dentist as well. It is not very often you come across people as being so kind-hearted, warm and genuine. "Doc" was definitely that kind of man. He loved his work and he truly cared about his patients. It was an honor to have known him. - Posted by: Kelly Smith (Patient) on: Apr 10, 2012

Deanne, Jill, Gary, and all my friends at 506, I am so sorry for your loss. There are not enough words to express my gratitude and privilege for knowing Dr. Spiegel and having him in my life. I was truly blessed to have experienced his generosity, kindness and friendship. I started working for Harvey at the ripe old age of 19 and grew up under his watchful eye for the next 15 years. He was the best boss (with an amazing staff) that one could ask for. I will never forget him. He was a great man and I am better for having known him. - Posted by: Michelle Slezak (former Receptionist) on: Apr 05, 2012

I am deeply saddened to learn of Harvey's passing. I came to know Harvey and Deanne at the Fringe Theatre Festival, and Harvey struck me as deeply caring, thoughtful, and kind. The Festival will not be the same without his valued presence. The world has lost a truly great man. Please know Deanne, that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Tom Hack () on: Apr 01, 2012

I remember when I was eight Dr. Spiegel became my dentist, and the memories going to his practice at Medical Arts Building. He removed my bad tooth, provided cleaning, and taking x-rays (when I was younger needed a retake, due to that plate thing inserted in the mouth-way uncomfortable lol). I'll remember him he was such a great guy, and an awesome dentist. My condolences to his family. Scholem RIP Dr. Harvey Spiegel - Posted by: Michael R (patient ) on: Mar 30, 2012

I want to put into writing my feelings over the years for Harvey as both a patient and friend. Harvey was my dentist since about 1978 and I want to tell you that I have always considered him to be unparalleled in skill and attitude as a professional. In all those years I went through many dental issues and Harvey handled everyone impeccably. I have had fillings, bridges, an implant, teeth filings and many other procedures. He always knew when to bring in the specialists, which is a skill by itself. I remember at least two or three occasions when I had emergencies and Harvey picked me up at home on a Sunday and drove me to his office. He always told me when I was going through some of my problems to call him at home if the need arose. When I had teeth that had broken he never let me leave his office without temporaries, so I didn’t have a hockey player smile. As the rabbi said in his sermon Harvey was one dentist you looked forward to visiting because his touch was so gentle and he was an expert at minimizing pain. Whenever I would be in the office for a cleaning he would make a point of visiting so we could have our usual Blue Bomber discussion. Ricki and I would see him and Deanne at the fringe festival and it was fun to consult with them as they had seen almost everything and we respected their opinions. We are going to miss him immensely. - Posted by: Gary Miles (Patient and friend) on: Mar 30, 2012

Dr. Spiegel provided me his home phone number in case the pain meds he subscribed were not sufficient. It was Yom Kippur and he was willing to respond to my needs for another prescription to prevent my discomfort even if it interrupted his holiday. I did have to contact him and he was more than happy to help. He was that kind of man. Shalom, Dr.Spiegel. May you receive blessings in abundance. - Posted by: Kathleen Torgerson (patient) on: Mar 30, 2012

From Dental Arts building to Medical Arts building I remember the excitement and the lift that Dr Spiegel had for his new work surroundings. We were his patients for twenty some years. Mary his hygienist and Leanne his assistant all wonderful and pleasant people. Dr Spiegel was extremely professional always friendly and you could always have a good conversation with him about what was happening and going on in the city of Winnipeg. The needle well he was an absolute pro at that oh my god was he good. When he said it might pinch a bit I really don't know what he was talking about - never felt a thing. He went out of his way to arrange for our daughter to get a hold of people's extracted teeth for her Science project at school as she was comparing egg shells to teeth and does the enamel wear the same on egg shells the same way as teeth by using lemons and certain juices which Dr Spiegel thought she was a bright child to have thought of that at such a young age. So, our deepest sympathy to Dr Spiegel's wife and family and may you remember Dr Spiegel as the wonderful human being he was. Rest in peace for they only take the best and that he was. Keep Fringing Dr Spiegel. - Posted by: The Kazina Family (Patients) on: Mar 30, 2012

I was a patient of Dr. Spiegels for over 40 years since I was 7 or 8 yrs old. My wife, children, and grand sons were also patients unfortunately my grandaughter won't have the pleasure of meeting Dr.spiegel as she only recently cut her first teeth. Dr. Spiegel was always warm and friendly with all of us and took care of our teeth like they were his own. Our condolences to his family and his great staff who also treated us very well. It was a very nice service today and he will surely be missed by many. A few times today it was said we have no answers why God takes us away so soon and all I can think of is, God had a toothache and wanted the best Dentist there was. - Posted by: Rob Reimann (Patient) on: Mar 29, 2012

Vic and I started seeing Dr. Spiegel I believe 1974. He also was our kids' dentist. His kind, gentle nature was so evident, and he helped me (Lydia) get over my fear of needles and dentists. I always remarked, you are the gentlest needlegiver in the whole world, to which he gently smiled. Thanks for taking care of us with such excellency. We can't imagine going to a different dentist... We will truly miss you. Rest in peace Dr. Speigel - Posted by: Vic and Lydia Dyck (patients) on: Mar 29, 2012

I was recommended to see Dr. Spiegel in 1972 when I lost trust in the dentist I had. I was looking for an honest man and a good, skilled dentist. I got all that and more in Dr. Spiegel – a kind and encouraging man. It is priceless to find someone whom you can trust to take care of you. That is who Dr. Spiegel was to me and, later, to my mother. I moved away from Winnipeg in 1988, but she remained his patient till the end – for 34 years. We will greatly miss him. Our deepest sympathy and God's blessings to his dear family. - Posted by: Rozalia (Bugan) Garrett and mom Rose Horvath (patient) on: Mar 29, 2012

I remember Harvey from Peretz Shul as a kind friend/student. He sat behind me and over all those years, I really appreciated his kind gentle character. Dr. Spiegel was my dentist from around the age of 8 to into my thirties when I left Winnipeg. He was always kind, gentle, caring, available, professional and compassionate. Also, I have never had even one cavity - due both to genetics and, in no small part, Dr. Spiegel's excellent care! It saddens me to hear the news of his passing at such a young age.
