MILDRED RUTH MCTAVISH
Date of Passing: Mar 25, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMILDRED RUTH MCTAVISH (née JOHNSON) Peacefully, on Sunday, March 25, 2012 Mildred Ruth McTavish (née: Johnson) was welcomed into the arms of God after a long struggle with cancer. Millie as she was fondly known leaves to mourn her loving husband of 51 years Judge Gordon McTavish, her two children Sandi (Brett) and Rob (Sue) her beloved granddaughter Brannagh and Brothers Bill (Joan) and Al (Gail), numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws and many, many friends. Millie had a gentle, loving personality that touched everyone she met, and her sparkling eyes would light up every room she entered. She was an amazing Mother, friend and mentor who was always there for her children and family, an extraordinary person that will be deeply missed by many. No matter the situation she was always positive, always able to find the silver lining, and brought out the best in people. Millie was predeceased by her parents Edmund and Pearl Johnson. Millie married Gord McTavish February 24, 1961. Their lives became complete when Rob and Sandi came along (not to forget the numerous family dogs). The family spent many happy summers at the family cottage at Star Lake in the Whiteshell. Auntie Millie was a true Laker and was known all around Star for her kindness and fun loving ways; especially when she got together with her best friend Muriel Beech. Once the clock struck four you could be sure to find them on the dock sipping Crown Royal and munching on Cheezies. She took pride in her culinary skills and our home was a place that no one refused a dinner invitation to, especially when her famous ribs were on the menu! Millie enjoyed curling with the girls and was a fixture along with friends the Beech's at the Granite Curling Club. More recently, Millie enjoyed many evenings playing Horses and bridge with all of her friends at Marina Del Rey. The family would like to thank the close relatives and friends who made sure she was never alone and of course the dedicated nurses (her angels ) at The Victoria General Hospital for the kind and compassionate care they bestowed on her during this difficult time. In keeping with her indomitable spirit, she always had a smile for the girls and we know they all had a place in their hearts for her. The morning of her passing she blessed us with the most beautiful sunrise; the rays were a warm, reassuring hug and smile from her, letting us know that everything will be all right and that she is safe. Your mother is always with you. She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street She's the smell of bleach in your freshly laundered socks She's the cool hand on your brow when you're not well Your mother lives inside your laughter, she's crystallized in every tear drop She's the map that you follow with every step that you take She's your first love and your first heart break and nothing on earth can separate you Not time, Not space. Not even death will ever separate you from your mother. You carry her inside of you. A celebration of Millie's life will be held at the Granite Curling Club, (1 Granite Way-formerly 22 Mostyn Place) on Saturday, April 7, 2012 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. We invite family and friends to please join us in this celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Millie's memory to CancerCare Manitoba or Siloam Mission. Funeral Home Crematorium 774-7474 Condolences: www.bardal.ca

I am one, of the oldest, to have the blessing, of "Auntie Millie", in my life. There are photos, of both this amazing Lady, and her mother holding me, as a baby. We did not discover her passing, until today. October, 2010, when I was in the Homeland, I definitely called her apartment, but neither my mother, nor I had talked, to Millie, for a few years. The last time I saw The McTavish Family was at Star Lake, in 1977. I picked-up Mom, who had been visiting. [I cannot remember, when Gordie's old Lincoln finally disappeared! lol] I swam, with Sandy, and Robby, and teased the heck out of them, as they would not remember 6 years earlier, when I stayed, in that famous Tudor Home, in Fort Garry, at Christmas Time. The two of us [Mom will be 88, in October] wish The McTavish Clan, and Friends all the best, and Millie will be always, with We, Prairie Folk, although, in Kitchener, Ontario. God Bless xo - Posted by: Marc P. Stanley (My Mother is her childhood friend) on: Aug 22, 2012

I don't remember tons about Auntie Millie, mostly because I was still pretty young when we sold the cottage. I do remember her love for the lake itself, but, mostly for events...like the poker derby and cornroast! I can't believe those things don't happen the way they used to..I guess we really did have our very own little piece of paradise at Star. I remember anyone being welcome in their cottage, at anytime..and she used to get so involved with all the kids activities! Today, at 4pm, I think I'll have a Crown! - Posted by: Jenn Rosky (Friend at Star Lake) on: Apr 12, 2012

What a great loss to our building. Her smile, sparkling eyes and great sense of humour will be missed. Millie was a great asset, at Marina, working with our Social Committee and whatever she was asked to do. My sincere condolences to all the family. I will miss her. Auntie Millie will be remembered for many great qualities, but her kindness, understanding and easy going manner are the ones dear to me. The memories we shared at Star Lake were some of the best times of our lives. What a fabulous place to have a cottage. I now know why she and Auntie Muriel were always so happy after 4:00 pm on their docks. - Posted by: Cindy Fraser (Jenkins) (friend) on: Mar 30, 2012
