Date of Passing: Mar 28, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIVAN KEITH SEXSMITH It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, after a brief illness, on March 28, 2012. Ivan leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 63 years, Delores, and their children Delmar (Jackie) (Winnipeg), Colleen (Toronto), Terry (Chris) (Toronto), and Shauna (Alex) (Toronto); grandchildren Ian (Kat) (San Francisco, CA), Kathy (Ithaca, NY); grandson Sean (Diane) and great-granddaughter, Sienna (Bermuda); and grandchildren Christopher (Toronto) and Shannon (Ottawa). He is survived as well by his brother, Donald (Mary) (Winnipeg), sister, Margaret (Kelowna, BC), brother, Robert (Vera) (Edmonton, AB), and many nieces, nephews and their families. Ivan was born in Elm Creek, MB on April 15, 1925. The eldest of seven children of James and Hazel Sexsmith, he spent his childhood helping on the family farm before attending University. He enlisted with the R.C.A.F. in 1944 and trained as a fighter pilot. With the end of the war in Europe, he was decommissioned but soon re-enlisted with the British Navy for another brief stint as a pilot. Returning home to Manitoba, he completed his education as a Chartered Accountant, and went on to pursue his career with several firms mainly in the agricultural sector including Cham Foods and Miracle Feeds. From 1960 to 1969, in a departure from his agricultural background, he was the Comptroller for the fledgling television station, CJAY-TV in Winnipeg. Resuming his career with Miracle Feeds took him to Montreal in 1970 and to London, ON in 1982 where he retired. Ivan and Delores pursued several interests in London, foremost of which was their involvement with the Unitarian Fellowship of London where they met many friends. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ivan's life will be held Saturday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship, 557 Clarke Road, Rev. Myron Andes presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Unitarian Fellowship of London. We will remember Ivan through the Grace he wrote and presented many times at family events: We are blessed by the Five Senses, That we may know the World in which we live. We are blessed by Reason, That we may understand the Realities that surround us. We are blessed with Intuition, That we may tune in, and be part of, the Mystery of Life. We are blessed with a Heart, That we may feel what our other Senses can only witness. We are blessed with Free Will, That we may choose how we shall Live. Let us now take a moment to be thankful for the many blessings we share, And to renew our pledge to uphold the values that create the environment in which the Human Spirit may grow. May Peace be with us all.

I was reading On Manitoba when I came upon the obituaries...and was shocked when I saw Ivan had died. I worked with Ivan for many years...he was the smartest...brightest..knowledgable..person I met. I truly enjoyed working with him. My condolences to all his family. I often think of Ivan when I have a difficult problem to solve...and I usually come up with the answer..thanks to his memory. - Posted by: Archie M Cham (CO-Worker at Cham Foods) on: Sep 12, 2012

Ivan was one of the founding members of the first PROBUS Club in London, and nothing was too much for him to assure its wellbeing; he succeeded eminently and we will always remember the hilarious stories and jokes he told us at closing time of our monthly meetings. - Posted by: Harry Coumans (PROBUS Club, London friend) on: Apr 10, 2012

The name Ivan Sexsmith evoked a memory from the past. My late husband, Jake Dyck, was also connected for a time with Cham Foods. Ivan's name arose from time to time in conversation about work. Although I have no specific memory of the man the name spurred me on to read the obit and I am particularly grateful for the grace reprinted here. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Helene Dyck () on: Apr 07, 2012

I have known Ivan for just a couple of years; always a warm, strong handshake meeting at Fellowship. At our monthly pot-luck lunches here, there was always the famous Scottish shortbread treat, made by Ivan. My daughter, Samantha, 9 particularly loved that shortbread... so I asked Ivan for his recipe, and to my surprise he came next week wrote out the most detailed note in his hand, so that I would make it right. Perhaps it was the accountant mind for detail. But I appreciated it so much... I will keep this with my important papers, always. A very kindly man. He lived a very full and purposeful life. I will miss him, as like a Grandfather, I never had. Patrick and Samantha Crawford, London, ON - Posted by: Patrick Crawford (Friend at Unitarian Fellowship of London) on: Apr 02, 2012

Del, Delmar, Colleen, Terry, Shawna and families. In the Book of Memories there are many beautiful pages to bring a quiet smile of peace and acceptance. And these you may return to again and again for they are engraved on your heart. Kay - Posted by: Kay Jolly () on: Apr 02, 2012
